Today we’d like to introduce you to Shadana Chaney.
Shadana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started off as a Fashion Designer which I still am today. I always loved the idea of fashion but did not decide to pursue a career in fashion until about three years ago. It was around the time I was working a full-time job at the City of Houston and taking a business class at the University of Houston on weekends. I would always get compliments about the way I dressed at work and also in the class. Well, one day after class, one of my classmates stopped me and said, I show up in the class all the time just to see what you’re gonna wear. That comment really struck a light in me and confirmed what I had already been considering, and that was to pursue a career in fashion design. I started designing cocktail dresses for women and was really excited but also frustrated at the same time. This was considering I loved designing but was not knowledgeable about everything that went into the process of being a designer. I had no experience in the field nor did I have a degree in fashion design. After about a year into my career as a designer not quite working out how I intended it to, I decided to take a step back and educate myself on the process by reading books, taking classes, and working in the industry. In the meantime, I worked as a stylist on and off the air and now I’m a fashion and beauty blogger known as the Influential Petite. I am still working towards launching a clothing line in the fall of 2019. This time, it will be done the right way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was no way smooth along the way. A lot of bumps and bruises but that comes with the territory of starting a business and being a girl boss. I would advise women and people who are just starting out to get a mentor to help you out along the way. Someone who has been in the field and can advise you on how not to make simple mistakes. I also encourage women to work in the industry you are pursuing because you can take that knowledge and apply it to your own brand or business.
Please tell us about Influential Petite.
I am a Fashion and Beauty Influencer known as the Influential Petite. I help petite women look and feel empowered through fashion and beauty. I do that through my Blog and also my YouTube videos. My focus is petite women because it’s a niche I can relate to as a petite woman. I also feel more comfortable, confident, and more of an expert when talking to my audience.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I really don’t believe in luck, but I do believe in the power of prayer, the power of speaking affirmations over your life and career, and the power of perseverance. Having a combination of all those things you are destined to succeed no matter what.
