Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Rankin.
Shannon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m from the Dallas area, attended college in Austin, Texas and happily majored in accounting. I had an excellent accounting professor and mentor throughout college who motivated me to further my career with graduate courses and to become an auditor. After graduating, I began working in public accounting. My experience as an auditor taught me a lot about myself. I learned how to effectively balance several clients across multiple industries. This experience allowed me the opportunity to apply my knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Standards early on in my career.
I am grateful for the six years of training and leadership I received in public accounting. However, I knew I could do more in my career that would bring greater personal fulfillment by helping others with the skillset I had acquired. My college roommate planted seeds over the course of ten years, encouraging me to build my own accounting and financial reporting business. After spending my time in public accounting, I was finally ready to take that leap and founded Kept Financial alongside my partner, Hilary Russell.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since I decided to take the leap to start my own financial services company, I received a tremendous amount of support. My first client was a good friend from college who established her own tutoring school, Sunshine Learning Dallas, after the pandemic changed the educational landscape we once knew. Working alongside the founder of Sunshine Learning Dallas and helping her navigate her new business landscape, gave me the motivation necessary to continue helping inspiring business owners to grow and expand the businesses they care about.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kept Financial?
Kept Financial adds value to small business owners by creating a solid foundation for future growth through bookkeeping, financial reporting and advisory services. My goal is to equip small business owners with the information they need in order to make sound decisions that ultimately lead to future growth.
I provide advisory services utilizing the Level 5 framework created by Edi Osbourne and taught to me by my mentor, Geni Whitehouse. By making sense of the numbers and creating actionable plans, I help business owners achieve their financial objectives. There is nothing more fulfilling for me than helping business owners develop thriving companies from the ground up.
Kept Financial aims to “give back” by providing mothers with a skillset that allows them the freedom and flexibility to work from home and support their families.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I ruptured my achilles in February of this year while starting my business! Nothing like an injury to keep you focused on your goals.
