Meet Sherri Mullins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherri Mullins.

Sherri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I realized my love for interior design in 6th grade. While many kids my age were outside playing, I created floor plans for fun! I developed an elaborate system of specifying the room’s design to correlate with my mother’s decorating magazines. How I wish we kept that collection of floor plans!

I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design, but not until after accomplishing a Corporate Communications degree and ten years of flying internationally with American Airlines. Experiencing so many beautiful countries fed my creativity.

I gained valuable experience at hospitality firms, Wilson Associates in Dallas, and Looney & Associates in Chicago. Once I started a family, I became a full-time mom. But as a creative person, I could never say no to small projects that came along! I love being inspired by creativity, vision, and finding solutions to design opportunities.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was one of the top design students in my class and an incredibly dedicated designer, but potential clients may not know that. With each project, you must prove yourself. Your heart and your head must be in every single project. Otherwise, the design suffers–that is unfair to your client AND to yourself.

Since returning from a hiatus in the professional design field while dedicating time to my family, my biggest struggle has been gaining momentum with great projects. My family relocated from Chicago back to Dallas recently, and establishing design relationships in a new place requires patience.

Another struggle that I believe all designers experience is achieving trust from your clients, and educating them on the process. There are so many intricate details involved in good design, and the client may only be privy to a few. Trust is one of the biggest assets that a client can give a designer.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sherri Mullins Interiors story. Tell us more about it.
Sherri Mullins Interiors was established out of a high desire to elevate the potential in each and every space. I am always curious about the impact of a well-executed aesthetic, and I overthink the hell out of a space so the client doesn’t have to.

Recently, I was fortunate to be involved in the design of the new office for Allie Beth Allman & Associates, a Dallas-based Berkshire Hathaway Company. They are the premier real estate firm, consistently ranking #1 in luxury custom home and estate sales. They are very forward-thinking with workspace design and asked me to create a residential feel in an office environment. Their agents and clients now enjoy a beautiful place to work. Believe me, there are MANY workspaces in the DFW area and beyond that could use my design eye and attention to detail!

I design small-scale, residential-style interiors for workplaces. Homelike environments in the workplace can enhance business. I integrate a design aesthetic that speaks to the professional and their clients.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
My latest project was the additional office for Allie Beth Allman & Associates–it is something I am proud of. I am very lucky to have been approached by two top-producing colleagues, who invited me to present my ideas to them. Gabriella Miller and Dona Robinson put their trust in my design eye when they really didn’t know me very well. I approached the project as a boutique firm, with comfy seating for working and meeting clients, swivel chairs to take in a great view, and a meeting room ‘corner office’ with round table and monogrammed chairs. The whole concept was created to encourage collaboration among leading agents while enjoying the comforts of home.

The success of this design would not have been possible without the trust and creative freedom given to me. I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved in a project from concept to completion, and to have happy clients!
