Today we’d like to introduce you to Shyona Boston.
Shyona, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Registered Nurse by trade and I had always put all of my time into my career in healthcare. I have always had a love for makeup but never really pursued it due to my current profession. I would see these beautiful makeup looks on red carpets, awards show or just in everyday life. I wanted to look like the people I encountered with these gorgeous looks. I started practicing/learning on myself and the more I learned, the more intrigued I became. It became a hobby of mine.
I started purchasing more products, taking courses, online learning and using live models to perfect my skill. It was then that my hobby evolved, my love for makeup became a passion. I would wake up and go to sleep thinking about makeup. How to do certain skills, how to elevate and perfect my craft was the only thing I talked about. I went to the Institute of Makeup Arts in Memphis, TN and became a certified Makeup Artist. I have now been doing makeup for three almost four years and I’m now located in Rockwall, TX. I service clients in Rockwall, TX, Dallas, TX and surrounding areas.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Transitioning into makeup isn’t easy. There are already so many established makeup artists out there, whom are really great and your just trying to create your own brand amongst them. After moving to Rockwall from Memphis, I have to establish/rebuild my clientele and that isn’t easy. Being new to a city, the people that currently reside there don’t know anything about you so you have to make your presence known. I have to really promote my looks, my business and gain people’s trust to book me for their makeup needs. I am networking everyday and joining the makeup artist community here in hopes to gain more clients and develop some really good relationships with other artists as well. In this day and time, social media is our biggest promotional tool, so I utilize social media as much as possible.
ShyB.Artistry Makeup – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is called ShyB.Artistry Makeup and I service makeup needs of ALL people. People of all races, ethnic backgrounds, cultures, etc. I do weddings, proms, birthday, photoshoots, fashion shows and any event that someone feels the needs to be glammed. I specialize in bridal and beauty makeup but aimed to please all makeup requests. As a makeup artist, I pride myself on assisting others in becoming there best selves. What sets me apart from other artists is providing a friendly and soulful experience that is fulfilling to my clients. I solely focus on enhancing the natural beauty and features of all my clients. When you get out of my chair, you will still look like yourself, still be yourself but beautifully enhanced and confident. I focus more on the beauty of a makeup application and not the beat.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as accomplishing all goals you have set for yourself. You don’t necessarily have to see your name in lights and be on TV to be successful. I would like to become a celebrity makeup artist in the future and that’s a goal I will continue to pursue no matter how hard because I have the drive for it and that is my ultimate goal. No matter how big or small the goals, if you put God first, if you work hard, never give up, and achieve that goal, you are successful. If that accomplishment brings bigger rewards, opens more doors and brings you more opportunities, then that’s a bonus. Once my company has become a household name or a common name of choice used for makeup, then I will definitely feel I have made it. And again, everything else that comes with that will be a very rewarding bonus.
