Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Brown.
Hi Stacey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got started coaching in 2016 after recovering from a series of traumas in the years before. In 2013, I experienced a severe bout of post-partum depression. This same year, I lost my father and my sister, four months apart from each other. In 2014, my home caught on fire, leaving my family displaced for months and me. In April of 2014, I attempted suicide due to the pain from grief and loss.
Fortunately, I was able to get the help I needed and put in the hard work to return to mental wellness. I became passionate about helping others, particularly spiritual leaders, maintain their mental well-being, peace, and impact. As an ordained minister who has been doing the work for over a decade, I understand the unique challenges that those in ministry face. It is my call to be a minister to those who minister.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has in no way been smooth. As I mentioned previously, there have been plenty of obstacles and trials. I would add that there is also the challenge of being a younger, Black, Bisexual woman in the clergy space. Some believe that I have no business as a woman being ordained but have even stronger opposition due to my sexual identity. It has caused me to have tough skin and to be completely devoted to the purpose that God has designed me for.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Stacey D. Brown Coaching and Consulting?
Stacey D. Brown Coaching and Consulting was founded because I recognized that many leaders, particularly those in the clergy and the nonprofit space, lack self-care plans, which leave them burnt out, disillusioned, and ready to quit. I am passionate about providing education and mental wellness strategies that clarify call, reinvigoration of passion, and increased productivity and peace.
In addition to my experience in ministry, I have over 12 years of experience in process improvement, which allows me a unique perspective to improve how my clients are doing things, not just what they are doing. I offer individual and group coaching as well as workshops and courses.
Brand wise, I would say my pride and joy is our signature course, I AM Well, a 10-week mental wellness intensive designed for advocates, activists, and ministers. In this course, we cover various topics, such as understanding the difference between call and assignment and identifying and dealing with trauma.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been EXTRA! I was very talkative and a social butterfly in school who had a firm stance for justice. I would often get in trouble in school for speaking out for things I felt unfair and prejudicial. I never minded not being the favorite if I was standing up for what was right. I was ok with getting in “good trouble, and growing up in El Paso in the mid-80s and 90s, the was plenty to get into.
Activity-wise, I was in EVERYTHING! I played sports and was in the band, choir, student government, ROTC, honor society, and many community service projects.
