Meet Stacey Magovern of Point Blank Safety Services in Burleson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Magovern.

Stacey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is really about believing in yourself, never giving up and the true American dream. I was born an entrepreneur, I bought my first business at 23 a lingerie store in Abilene Texas, I bought my 2nd business at 24 a Disney store in the Mall of Abilene. However, it was 3rd business a Nextel Cellular store where I really realized I could do big things. During my time with Nextel, I won many awards and set several unsurpassed sales records. I was continuously told that if I was that successful in a little town like Abilene what could I do in a larger market. This really stuck with me.

In 2005 I met and later married the love of my life Michael Magovern, a police officer. We moved to DFW not knowing what my next adventure would be. During our time in the Metroplex, as a police wife I learned what most people don’t realize about police officers. These amazing people that put their lives on the line everyday in most departments are paid very little. They rely on off duty work to make ends meet. I watched my husband work off duty jobs here and there, traffic control and security with no guarantee of work and very random opportunities.

This became my next big idea! A marketplace for police and off duty work. How great would it be if each officer could schedule their off duty work and know exactly how much additional income they would have each month. I started a company, Point Blank Safety Services. I formed and LLC, I purchased a website, Then the real work began I spent the next two years while working full time, raising two boys and running a household reaching out to construction companies that use police officers for highway construction work. In every spare minute, I was emailing, calling and visiting these companies. As we all know, Texas only has two seasons winter and highway construction.

Keep in mind this is a slippery slope because you can’t really get a contract for traffic control until you have a staff of police officers and you can’t get an officer until you have clients. However, I believed in this idea and I believed in myself so I never gave up. I got a lot of negative feedback people who told me this wouldn’t work and it wasn’t really a thing and those that said I should stick to sales. I didn’t listen to any of it I knew if I could just get one contractor to give me a chance I could make this happen.

I will never forget what happened next. I was a normal morning in August 2014 I was getting ready for work and the doorbell rang. It was Fed Ex with a package for Point Blank Safety. What? My company didn’t get packages?? I opened it to find a $1.5M contract with AGL Constructors for police officers to work traffic safety on the 35E managed lane project from Dallas to Denton! I DID IT!

The next few weeks are really a blur there is a saying, “be careful what you wish for because you just might get it” That is so true. Well with a lot of prayers and a police network that helped spread the word we were determined to make this dream come true. This wasn’t just a dream for me and my family but for all the police officers we could now provide with steady off duty work.

Since 2014 my company has grown by leaps and bounds we’ve had more success than I could of ever imagined. We now have a pool of almost 200 police officers that work multiple highway construction projects and construction site security all over the state of Texas. I am very grateful and I know without these amazing mean and women there would be no Point Blank Safety Services.

Because of the amazing success of Point Blank Safety Services, I wanted to do more and give back. In 2017 I founded Blue Family Fund, Inc a 501c3 that provides financial assistance to families of fallen or injured law enforcement officers and scholarships to dependents of law enforcement officers. Since our inception we have been able to help eight families and provide two scholarships.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle was when we received our $1.5M contract it required $5M in insurance to even be able to set foot on a TXDOT site. $5M in insurance runs around $15,000 I didn’t have $15,000 I didn’t have $2,000. With some help from family and selling everything we were able to secure the insurance to begin work. I feel like many people would of given up at that point and just said, “Oh Well this isn’t going to happen.” That is the point where I said $15,000 is not going to stop me from making this happen.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Point Blank Safety Services, LLC – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We provide police officers for highway traffic control in construction sites and security. I am most proud of the fact that I have enough contracts that police officers can schedule their off duty work up to 30 days in advance they know exactly when they are working and they can choose how many days they want to or need to work.

What sets us apart for the officer is the advance scheduling, multiple contracts officer appreciation events yearly and a nonprofit that pays it forward.

What sets us apart for the clients is one point of contact for scheduling and cancellations, largest pool of officers available in Texas, fully insured and licensed by the state.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love DFW everything you could ever want to do is within an hour drive. I would say I don’t like traffic but of course that is my business so without traffic I wouldn’t have a company.
