Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerrie Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us . So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It was Spring of 1998, I was getting married. My sister, only 16 at the time was my Maid of Honor. At some point throughout the day she told me we were going to have a wedding business in the future. Fast forward to 2006, my sister a recent college grad, working in corporate America and not loving it, came to me with her desire to start this wedding planning company. I was already running a garden design company, but it sure sounded fun! I told her I would help her with the business side of it and the rest is history! We started with just planning and quickly added the floral design department! With my love of gardens, flowers and landscapes, I was excited to dive into fresh flowers. Here we are 12 years later going strong, and in two cities! We built this business in honesty and quality of product and it’s served us well!
Has it been a smooth road?
Struggles? All business owners expect a few bumps in the road, but we not only hit those bumps, we crashed into huge road blocks!! In 2009 just a few years after starting the business, we were looking to expand our space. Business was booming and we were excited. We rented an old historic church in Dallas. We were over the moon! This place was amazing! Clients walked in and were in awe of its beauty. Exactly thirty days after move in, a city inspector knocked on the door and asked what we were doing there. We told her about our business and she let us know that the building was red tagged because of previous renovation issues. We were told to vacate immediately. Needless to say, with a four year lease in place and a very strategically written lease, we were in trouble. A couple of lawyers and $40,000 later, we were working out of my sisters garage! We didn’t give up though!!! We were determined to get over this hurdle. We worked part time jobs, planned weddings and made flowers without pay. We persevered!!!
