Meet Syreeta “Divine” Mass of ROOTS Wellness in Pantego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Syreeta “Divine” Mass.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Syreeta. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist was the seed of an idea that was planted long before I actually decided to get my training. It all started when I bought My Mother a Gift Certificate for a Massage over 20 years ago, in the mid-1990s. I remember the Lady had a room in Her home that She worked from, and I thought that was such a unique job. Something about working for Yourself and the whole “hippyish” vibe of it all appealed to Me. I started researching, finding out what I could about how to get into this career.

However, I was apprehensive because Massage was somewhat taboo at the time, and I was concerned about what people would think. So, instead, I decided to go to Art School in Atlanta to study Video & Film Production. While living in Georgia, My interest in Holistic Wellness really began to increase. One of My roommates let Me borrow a book by Queen Afua entitled, “Heal Thyself”, and that is where My Passion for Holistic Wellness really started to cultivate. Although I was aware of these practices, that particular Book introduced Me to the benefits of Yoga, Massage, Meditation, and Vegan and Raw foods as a lifestyle. I was so intrigued. Art Institute ended up discontinuing the Program I was enrolled in. So with that being said, I decided to return home to Texas. Once I was back in Texas, I had a few Office Jobs before landing a collections Gig, at a Bank downtown Dallas. I absolutely Hated it! So, I started researching Massage Schools.

After much contemplation, one day I decided I couldn’t take it another moment. I left work for lunch, never went back and decided I would enroll in Massage School. I had No idea how I was going to pay for it, or what to expect. I enrolled in The Massage Institute of Dallas. I loved everything about Massage School. We did Yoga every day, and I was learning so much about various Holistic practices that I had never even heard of. It opened my eyes to a whole new world. I officially received My License on June 13, 1998. That was 21 years ago. Since I’ve been Licensed, I’ve worked in various settings, including, Spas, Chiropractic Practices, and also as a Mobile Massage Therapist. Currently, My Corporate Mobile work keeps Me quite busy. Over the years I’ve had a few “regular” jobs. There’s also been some time that I have stopped practicing Massage completely, but no matter what, I always come back to it. It is truly my passion, and I am so amazed and proud of the progress that has been made in the industry.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been easy. In the beginning, especially. Massage wasn’t as popular or mainstream when I first started my career. There was a lot of speculation around the Massage industry. The lines were blurred, making it difficult for people to take it seriously as a Profession. Also, people thought of Massage as more of a luxury than a necessity, also making it difficult to make a decent living. That was extremely discouraging at times. Thankfully, technology and social media have opened up many amazing opportunities for Massage Therapists.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The Proudest moment of My Career was reaching the 20 Year mark. There were so many times I wanted to quit. There were even times that I took a break. However, I never totally gave up. I have to say, My Mother has been My rock throughout My journey. She Always encouraged Me to keep going and I’m So Happy I did.
