Meet Tamara Walker of Krewe Logistics in West

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Walker.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from Alexandria, LA. My goal has been to start my venture as an entrepreneur for several years. My plan was not only to become an entrepreneur, but to be successful in starting a real business, employing real people, and providing a real service to customers. The only way I knew to get started was by learning a marketable skill and getting to work. In my experience, that’s where the ideas, opportunities, and partners seem to generate. It takes an enormous amount of hard work, but that just comes with the territory.

In September 2018, I decided to LEAP from my secure 9 – 5 job to pursue full-time entrepreneurship. In doing this, I spread myself across multiple steams of income including freight brokering, a transportation company, and licensed property, casualty, and commercial insurance agent. While each of my roles are different in each, I motivate and push others beyond where they ordinarily did not feel they could go. My transparency enables my unique ability to influence others to also act on their dreams.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, the road was not always smooth. When I first started this venture it took four months before I landed my first customer. Afterwards, it took an additional two weeks before trucking companies started to call and inquire about my freight. Business picked up quickly by the 5th month and has grown tremendously in a short period of time. I manage several large customer accounts in various states. At one point I doubted my success in this business due to a slow start.

Entrepreneurs come from humble beginnings, so long as you’re willing to work hard, commit to your ideas, and take the risks necessarily to see those ideas become reality. Be inspired by those who have come before you and don’t let lack of experience dissuade you from following your dreams.

Krewe Logistics – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a Federal Licensed Property & Transportation Broker located in Fort Worth. As a Broker, I arrange transportation of freight by trucks, rail, sea and air. We can accommodate dry or temperature-controlled products using our warehousing partners. My trucking company, Krewe Transport, which is an additional part of the business, was established in December 2019 to hire owner-operators to lease onto the company and transport my customers freight by truck.

What sets me apart from others is my strong inner drive to grow. In addition to the brokerage and trucking company, I am planning the development of a transportation management system with the assistance of the IT Professionals in my family. This platform will provide a service to other fellow transportation brokers in managing their customers, motor carriers, documents, generation of invoices and accounting, dispatch, GPS tracking, ELD, and pre-pass. There will also be an optional feature for electronic data interchange capabilities. I have named this platform “The Gator.” I am also working on obtaining a Customs Broker license which gives us authority to assist in clearing imported goods our current and future customers may have.

Krewe Logistics has been designated as both a WBE – Women’s Business Enterprise and a Woman Owned Small Business ( WOSB). Working with a WBE can provide your company with many tax benefits. The federal government offers tax incentives for companies to use the help of woman-owned and minority businesses to supply certain services.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is living by my core values, priorities, and my purpose knowing I’m planting the seeds of a legacy that will flourish. I’ve been able to build a career as an entrepreneur and do what makes me thrive every day and give back to support my community.

My advice to others: You need to invest in yourself before you invest in anything else, by focusing and improving your skills, education, and experience. Without self-investment, you won’t be able to build a business or sustain one.
