Meet Tamika A. Reynolds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika A. Reynolds.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tamika. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
“Though life takes us through many obstacles in life, it’s not how we overcome them, but what we do with those obstacles that make us a better person both internally and externally.”

Never would I have envisioned that I would be where I am today. I am a mother of two young men, Davion and Daylion, an educator, a business owner and an author. A Fort Worth native born and raised, I have always had a passion for writing. After going through so much in life, writing was a way for me to express how I felt or what I might be going through. I would have to say it all started back in high school. I would carry a small journal with me that I called “My Book of Thoughts.” I would sit in a corner or a quiet place, grab my small journal and just write and sometimes for hours.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was in 2006. A life-altering medical condition changed my life. I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, which resulted in me having brain surgery and a VP shunt placed on my brain. But who knew God had a plan for me; I was not giving up. I was a fighter. So I enrolled in college and though it was quite challenging and hard because I was in and out of the hospital, I was determined and motivated to not let anything get me down. In 2011, I received my Bachelor’s in General Business from Texas Wesleyan University. It was June 2016, when I had to face another obstacle. I fell ill and had to undergo my second brain surgery, where they replace the first VP shunt with another VP shunt due to a malfunction. But by the grace of God, I am still standing and able to tell my story. Over those course of years, my love for writing poetry never stopped. One of my bucket list items was to get my Master’s degree before I turned 40 and in December 2019, two weeks before my 40th birthday, I received my Master’s in Business Administration from Texas Wesleyan University. I have been employed at Texas Wesleyan University for eight years this November.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I self-published “A Whirlwind of Life: Genres of Poetry” in March 2013. My book has more than 100 poems on life, love, family and so much more. Writing the poetry book was a way for me to my story with others of how I overcame some of life’s difficult experiences, from childhood to adulthood. If you were to ask me what poem I enjoyed writing the most, I would have to say, “Doors and The Road to Recovery.” The two poems were about me, all that I been through as a child, teenager and now adult. The main message drawn from the poems is to not let what people do or say to you affect your life. Put your faith and trust in God and he will give you many blessings. He will help you get through all of your struggles and hardships.

But my journey didn’t stop there. I also started a home-based business in 2013, Event Planning by Tamika. I found my love for planning events in 2004 when I planned my cousin’s wedding. That was my second passion. I specialize in weddings, parties, showers, etc. I enrolled in the Lovegevity University and became a certified wedding and event planner in September 2019. In April 2015 was my first big event for Event Planning by Tamika. All of the time and effort went into planning a beautiful 50th birthday bash and paved the way for many more events to come.

I am still writing poetry but have shifted the gears some, to a writing fiction book “Luck in the Hearts.” I hope to have the book self-published by next year. You can read more about this book by visiting my website below.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
This book and business could not be possible first without God. He has given me the wisdom and motivation to be where I am today. My mother, Dorothy Mullenix, is my ultimate role model, who has cheered and continues to cheer me on from the beginning! My wonderful children, Davion Oliver and Daylion Reynolds, and niece Alexus Sherwood, who provided their unending inspiration. To my love, Shawn Johnson, thank you for your reassurance, devotion, continued support and help whenever I needed it! To the many others who have graciously given me their encouraging words and love, you have all touched my life one way or another.
