Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenisha Childs.
Tenisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been braiding since I was 15/16 and it has always been my “hustle”. I started calling my clients my Gorgeous Gals once I was done braiding their hair, I would post them on social media as my Gorgeous Gals and I would always say, my Hustle afterward. So I began to think, Gorgeous Gals……My Hustle….. GORGEOUS HUSTLE. But in the midst of working on my brand I endured a lot of pain, I lost a very close cousin and on top of that, I dealt with being publicly embarrassed because of the relationship I was in, all in the same month/year! So all this pain I have endured, I built myself back up and all that pain, I put into my craft. Gorgeous Hustle is more than just a brand to me, Its a way of life. It’s the way I feed my kids, take care of my family. I’m a single mother of four so having one job was never enough…… However you Hustle, Make it Gorgeous.
Has it been a smooth road?
Far from smooth, I knew absolutely nothing about the clothing/fashion industry but I jumped in head first. I didn’t know what kinds of machines I needed, I had to go buy a laptop, cutter, press machine and once I got it… I didn’t know what to do with it. Everything was pretty much trial and error but was great lessons. YouTube was a great factor. Just having to learn this business by myself will make you want to quit or think, is this even worth it?
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Gorgeous Hustle – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Gorgeous Hustle is a clothing company that I started. I look at myself as a designer, more of what I put out is what’s available, not can you make me a fit to match my shoes? I want Gorgeous Hustle to be big as Nike and with that being said… you can’t go in Nike and request a red shirt they have in black. My work is my craft and I craft so you can find some shoes to match my clothing not can you craft me something to match my shoes. I’m different and my craft is different. Gorgeous Hustle is something that I feel like every woman, girl, female can relate too. I’m proud of my brand and I know God said this is for me.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Dallas, it made me. Taught me how to hustle. I grew up in the hood and I wasn’t raised with a silver spoon in my mouth. It made me strong and made me see how I wouldn’t want my kids growing up in the hood like I did and with that being said, I will forever go hard so my kids won,t have to grow up the way I did or see the things I saw! The least thing I like about my city is the senseless black on black killings! I don’t understand it and really wish I had the power to talk to them and change it!
