Today we’d like to introduce you to Teran Martin.
Teran, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always said I wanted to stay home with my babies. But as we all know, financially, that has become increasingly more difficult in modern times. Many families need multiple incomes to survive and really, ours was no different. Prior to having children, I was working on getting my accounting degree, which I eventually received and was working in the corporate world. I did feel successful in what I was doing but never really felt fulfilled.
After having children, I started wondering what my purpose was outside of being a mother and a supporter of our household. There was some time that I struggled to find my place and where I fit into society. I adore my role as both a mother and a wife and am so immensely proud of all women who lead these roles with such success. For me though, I felt a calling outside our home. I knew I have always had a servant’s heart, which is where I have felt the most led.
I found my answer through my own breastfeeding journey. It was during this journey, and for me what felt like a journey of failure, that I started thinking there had to be a better way that mothers could be supported throughout their own personal breastfeeding journey. And as I began to develop the Nustle, I began to find my purpose, how I could use my servants’ heart to influence the lives of so many deserving mothers.
I do feel that my breastfeeding journey is similar to so many other mothers. With our first child, I was only able to breastfeed for a few weeks. It was a very stressful time and being that it was my first child, I was not equipped with the knowledge or really the support system to help me sustain. Fast forward 13 months and my husband and I welcomed our second child to the world. I was so pumped, pun intended, to breastfeed this little blessing for the long haul. I had done more research and really felt I had set myself up for success. In the hospital and even for the first week at home, things seemed so easy. But then my reality hit. I literally went from producing 6 oz to nothing in a few short hours. I was devastated. I felt I had failed both babies. My reality though, was that I had a hormone imbalance that caused my struggles. I wish I had prepared even more and had expert support to help me understand the complications that can arise postpartum, such as mine.
I say this to all you mama’s you are amazing and whatever you are able to give to your baby is a blessing. Whatever your goal is, my desire is that the Nustle and the support system through Mama’s Milk Wrap will help you meet and exceed your goals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a new business owner, you hear folks telling you to be prepared to fail and to expect to fail your first three tries at a business. Crazy I know! I can honestly say that each time I was faced with a mountain to climb, it suddenly turned into a molehill as the right people were placed in my path. I understand this is not the same for everyone, but I can recognize the benefits of contracting work out to experts who know their field. It is one thing to have a vision of helping mothers in their breastfeeding journey, but it’s another to have the expertise to have the product manufactured and sold in retail stores.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mama’s Milk Wrap story. Tell us more about the business.
As a young mother, I longed to nurse my babies. With our second I child, I was producing milk, but it would not come out. Later I found out that this was because of a hormone imbalance. While I was trying to dry up I would use a rock hard ice pack and a bed sheet that would jab into my very sore and engorged breasts and the bedsheets would not hold the compression therapy I needed so badly. I knew that I could not be the only woman who has had to dry up and knew there had to be a better way! So, I started praying and asking God what the answer would be to help alleviate this for other women. After much thought and prototypes, The Nustle wrap was born. Little did I know at that time, but the wrap would become a full-cycle all-in-one breastfeeding product.
While producing milk, doctors often recommend that women take a hot shower to encourage their letdown or milk release. This is because moist heat penetrates deeper into the skin, encouraging the letdown. There have been studies showing that heat therapy works over 90% of the time to help women sustain and/or increase their milk output. The hot shower is nice and all, but it comes with two obvious challenges, 1) the baby is on the other side of the door and 2) all that glorious milk is lost down the drain!!! Now Mama can use the Nustle to obtain the moist heat therapy and be able to collect her milk, tend to baby and keep being a super mom while helping to support her milk production.
The Nustle, which means to cherish, is a non-ingestible, full coverage, hands-free, pumping capability breastfeeding aid that has shown to help support mothers’ natural production or suppression through heat or cool therapy applied to the breasts. The Nustle Wrap can be heated in the microwave or cooled in the fridge/freezer to generate the desired temperature therapy when a ready mama can cool the wrap down and help to bring her journey to a close. Unlike those jabbing icepacks, the Nustle allows for a soft conforming design to cover the breasts with relief and a compression therapy built right into the straps that won’t fall off, leaving mama hands free to tend to the little one.
Both therapies have shown substantial benefits. With heat therapy, many have seen a significant increase of milk production in a single pumping session verse the times they don’t use the wrap. Time and time again, mamas come to me and tell me that they have reached their goal and have extended their journey. The cold therapy, I am told that their dry up times are cut into a fraction from their previous journey while not utilizing the Nustle. One of our testimonies indicated one year turned to less than one month with the Nustle.
Really what sets the Nustle apart is that it is the only product of its kind on the market. The Nustle Wrap is a unique, full-coverage heat and cool wrap designed to protect, enhance, and enable a healthy breastfeeding journey. It offers hands-free pumping with a soft and conforming design that supports lactation production or suppression.
Unlike other heating/cooling pads designed for nursing, The Nustle Wrap holds the temperature therapy for 20-30 minutes – which is typically the amount of time recommended by doctors for temperature therapies applied to the body. It has shown to sustain milk supply over long periods of time and increases milk output when pumping even as much as double the output than pumping without the wrap.
We have had mothers use the product prior to giving birth as a heating pad and belly support band while nursing for heat and cold therapy on the breast, and recently we have been told that mamas are using it postpartum as belly support. I love it when mamas find new diverse ways to utilize the Nustle Wrap.
What I am most proud of, though, is that we have built a support system to help lift mamas up throughout their journey. We have built a team of amazing lactation experts that continues to grow to help you through your most difficult times. Each purchase of a Nustle Wrap comes with a one-time free consultation with one of our experts. For me, the confidence in these lactation experts and other medical doctors has brought validity to the product. The fact that they see the product as a necessary tool for breastfeeding mothers has really helped me keep moving forward.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t like to think of it as luck but instead as finding the good in life’s challenges. My challenge was my own breastfeeding journey, but it was through this challenge, and with the help of God, that the vision of the Nustle Wrap came to be.
Each and every single time, a mother tells me how the Nustle has helped her in her breastfeeding journey, from the increasing supply to making it easier to pump at work, reaching and exceeding their goals, and helping to make the dry up journey less uncomfortable. I say a prayer over every wrap that departs Mama’s Milk Wrap to help each mother receive the benefits of this aid as a blessing.
