Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiera Johnson.
Tiera, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been singing my whole life. My entire family can see so it’s something that I have been surrounded by my whole life. Growing up I was always in choir and performing in concerts at school but I never had that big superstar dream of one day getting discovered and becoming famous. Coming to Texas State I met so many amazing creatives and they really inspired me to do something I love and take it to the next level.
In the summer of 2017, I started writing music for the first time and fell in love with the whole process. I spent all of 2018 writing and recording for the first time and just making connections with other artists and producers in San Marcos. By the middle of the year, I knew I wanted to release a project so in March of 2019 I dropped an EP on my birthday and it was one of the best things I have done. I was nervous putting my work out there for the first time but I got really good feedback so I am continuing to make more music.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been. Making the decision that I wanted to start getting serious about my music I didn’t look at all the background work that goes into that like recording, mastering, designing covers, and performances. I was still in school when I was deciding to do all of this so it kind of was a shock for me financially having to pay for studio time, clothes for performances, and producers but also time-wise by having shows in the middle of the week and still having to go to class the next day. The outcome of the process over ways the tribulations and I think that is why I love it so much.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a singer/songwriter. I create my own music but I also perform at places where I’ll do covers to songs. I am most of myself for putting myself out there and be willing to share my talent with everyone. I think what sets me apart from some artists is how genuine I am. All of my music comes from my past or current feelings so I sing about things I have experienced or been through.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I do. I actually plan on moving to Dallas for graduate school after I graduate next year. I think there are different opportunities there that can help people grow in their business or company.
