Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomea Coleman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tomea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always sung. My Mama says that the first time I sang was in the car at about 10 months old. I sang “Ring My Bell” by Anita Ward. My Mama almost swerved off the road! And from then on, I started singing beside my mother in church. I sang in church, school, competitions basically everywhere. I began singing professionally in high school under the mentorship of Dean Hill at Townview Magnet Center. I was then introduced to a local musician and began sitting in with his band in local clubs, accompanied by my mother since I was still in high school.
After high school, I continued to sing while getting my degree in Biology and minor in Chemistry at Prairie View A & M University. I won a lot of talent shows while in college and really honed my skill for capturing the audience. Anyone that knows anything about PVAMU knows you will get booed if you walk on stage looking like you don’t know what you are doing. Very tough crowds! But I can thank them for keeping me on my toes and humble. And for the record, I never got booed!
Got back home and started working, but soon I was back on stage doing local open mics and karaoke competitions. After winning for a few weeks, I was introduced to N’Tense The Band and I was a member of that band for seven years. We covered a lot of ground in those seven years and had a lot of fun. We performed internationally and with several award-winning artists locally and abroad. After being in the band for seven years, I decided to try my hand at having my own band and stepping out on faith. I worked very hard for N’Tense and wanted to work that hard for myself to see how far I can go.
So now, I am working on finishing my first project as an independent artist on my own label/production company. All while continuing to build my name and brand in the local, regional, and national market. I am also venturing back into stage plays and other avenues for creativity. I have also been able to get into session work doing jingles, voice drops, and commercials.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been… smoothish. My gift has always made room for me and I just do what I am good at doing. But anytime you are pursuing your dreams there will be obstacles. For me, the learning curve involved with starting a company, band, and putting out an original project has been big. I have researched and surrounded myself with people who have invaluable knowledge and they want to see me successful. And as a woman, there are always going to be those people that have an issue with strong women that are about their business. In those situations, I just pray and give it GOD and it always works out for me.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with TOMEA & N3M Band/Mea Muziq Productions – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a pretty open book. My business is MUSIC! I sing, write music, and I am learning the production side. I specialize in live and recorded performance. I am good at connecting with my audience and by the end of the show, we are family! I am most proud of stepping out on faith to pursue and use my God given abilities to go where my dreams take me. What sets me apart is that I only compete with the woman in the mirror. I do what I like and I focus on my goals. That’s it That’s All!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The release of my first single “I Forgive You” is something I am looking forward to. It is a song that just came to me one day while riding down the freeway. I’m really excited about my single and my first E.P. I get asked at every gig when will I have some original music to release and now I can say here it is! No big changes just a renewed focus on what I want and what God has for me.
