Meet Towana King of Support The South “Community Is Family” in Southern Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Towana King.

Towana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Towana King and Founder of Support The South “Community is Family”. I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. The youngest of four Sisters Shortly after graduating high school I gravitated to my calling of learning Business and Entrepreneurship. I earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from El Centro Community College in Dallas, TX. I have developed a passion for teaching, helping others in need and helping our Youth find ways to rise above the daily challenges that they go through.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Things are always a little harder if you are a young mother. I had my first child at 17 years old. She is now 12 going on 13. My dad my dad passed away from Renal Failure at the time I was turning 20. Losing my dad was really rough on me.

We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Support the South “Community Is Family” began with me wanting to do something to help the community I am from, South Dallas. I dove into action by asking for donations of clothing that were slightly used to new to redistribute back to those who need them. I use different venues such as Recreation and Outreach Centers around Dallas to set up a what I would call a Kiosk for people to come and search through clothes and shoes of all sizes, toiletries, household items and baby items that have been collected over a period of time, all for free.

Today Support The South “Community is Family” is still focusing on this aspect as well as other things like “Managing My Money” Classes for the Youth, Community Service, and a College Readiness Program for teens getting ready to graduate and be on their own in this challenging but fulfilling world. To be and example and to show them with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family deserves credit for helping keeping me motivated through the times when I felt like giving up.
