Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Hines.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
In 2013, I graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in studio art with a concentration in graphic design. I entered the workforce expecting to work as a graphic designer for the rest of my career. I landed a job with a local company designing promotional material and t-shirt graphics. While I enjoyed the design process, I quickly began to dislike the monotony of the work and longed to create traditional artwork. After working there two years, I decided to relocate to Dallas, TX, but I was unsure about whether a career in the arts was right for me.
When I got to Dallas, I worked at FedEx Office as a customer service representative. My time there allowed me to reassess my career goals. I also learned skills that have become invaluable for my business today, such as customer service tactics, packing, and shipping! After working at FedEx Office for a few months, I began working for the Dallas Community College District as an adjunct graphic design instructor. This reignited my passion for the arts. I became more motivated to create, and I slowly began getting involved in the Dallas art scene by submitting work to local shows and taking on freelance design projects.
Today I am a full-time artist doing business under the name AngelaO Art.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. There is a lot of freedom that comes with working for yourself, but that freedom can also be terrifying. There is no roadmap to making your dream work, and it is easy to feel like the time, and hard work you put in does not match with what you get out. I have learned to have faith in the process. You have to trust that everything will come together in the end. Never give up.
We’d love to hear more about AngelaO Art.
I offer portrait and landscape artwork that is enlightening and inspirational. I also offer graphic design services and custom artwork creation. My work is perfect for people who are interested in creating peace and contentment in their lives.
I am most proud that my work has the ability to make others feel empowered. We see and hear enough negativity on a daily basis from other people and the media. I want to add light to people’s lives.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I do not believe there are any barriers to female leadership. There are many women holding leadership positions in various aspects of society. What is most important is that women remain confident in these roles. A woman’s confidence will cause others to perceive her as the great leader she is.
