Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Robinson.
Barbara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I love to draw. As a child, I created my own books and illustrations just for fun and started taking art classes. In college, I pursued a Graphic Design degree. My art background, coupled with a slightly warped mind, led me to start my first nasty greeting card business. The cards were meticulously inked by hand on card stock. I mailed out an order form to friends and soon business was up and running. I tried making cards that were not x-rated, but I discovered that they didn’t sell. My niche was nasty and I was sticking to it. After graduating, I began working as a production artist/graphic designer at an advertising agency. I loved the work and challenges. I worked for several years, took time off to be a Mom, did freelance work, and still managed to keep coming up with card ideas, although, they were put on the back burner for many years. Now that my kids are grown, I’m finally pursuing that passion once again.
I’m excited that you chose me for the Trailblazer series, and I really appreciate the exposure, if you’ll excuse the pun!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was always worried about what people would think of my nasty art and whether or not I should continue with my illustrations. My husband appreciates how hard I work, yet he’s definitely not a fan! That’s OK. I’ve reached the magical fifties, that age where you ‘magically’ realize that you don’t really have to worry about what others may or may not think! I’m sorry it took me this long to wise up. That’s my advice to young women. It’s liberating to do what you love. Don’t question yourself, believe in yourself, work hard, and do what brings YOU joy.
Please tell us more about your artwork, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a digital artist specializing in funny, adult-themed cartoon illustrations. I sell through Redbubble, an online marketplace for independent artists. The website has a variety of products including cards and stationery, clothing, home decor, and tech accessories.
I’m currently working on a coffee table book “The Small Book of Big Penis Illustrations” that I hope to start selling on Amazon next year.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
As an artist, I love being inspired by other artists. I follow many artists on Instagram and am amazed by the creativity and talent I see.
