Meet Trailblazer Desiree Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Phillips.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Desiree. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story started in the typical “American Dream” way, but it developed into the new “Millennial/Entrepreneurial” way of living. Before I got started in my profession, I was a full- time student/athlete at Missouri State University. I grew up as a tomboy and my love wasn’t exactly a beauty, but it definitely was for art and sports. I always had a passion for art growing up. I would definitely say it stems from my GrandMother who currently still draws and paints. As I graduated from high school and entered my first year of college with an understudy of Criminal Justice, my love for makeup suddenly increased. I would practice on my teammates and friends, which allowed me to gain practice and knowledge of the makeup industry. As I continued my journey through college, my interest continued to grow. I found makeup artist volunteer opportunities to provide services for fashion shows or any events available. This allowed me to continue my growth to becoming a professional makeup artist. As I approached the end of my senior year of college, graduating with my Criminal Justice Bachelor’s Degree, I had no idea what I wanted to do in that field. After graduating, I decided to move back to my hometown, Memphis, TN.

I knew becoming a full-time makeup artist was what I really wanted to pursue, so I applied for a Beauty Advisor position at the local shopping mall. I figured this would really give me the experience I would need. I ended up receiving the position of the Beauty Advisor Floater, so my journey with learning the different cosmetic brands and products began. This allowed me to learn about different skin tones, ethnicities and proper makeup application techniques. After gaining six months of experience, I decided to make the big move to Texas. I felt that the makeup industry here was filled with more opportunities. After applying and receiving a job opportunity to work as a Beauty Advisor for the Chanel Counter in Dillards, I knew that my dream to become a makeup artist was starting to become into fruition. As I continued to gain experience, I started to gain clientele outside of the full-time job.

Within those six months there, I realized retail hours were pretty conflicting. However, I took the leap of faith and decided to become a makeup artist full-time. During the down seasons, I would pick up a part-time job with a staffing company, which allowed me to still have a financial cushion. Long story short, with faith, hard work and dedication, I no longer had to have a part-time job to support my living. I am now a proud full-time entrepreneur.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
During this journey, I would say the hardest obstacle and challenge for me would be the feeling of being uncomfortable. Growing up, we were taught to go to school, graduate from college, and get a 9 to 5 job. When I finally decided that I wasn’t going to allow fear to control my life anymore, everything that I wanted started to unravel. My advice to other women would be to trust the process and to follow your heart. If you feel uncomfortable, just know that it is for a good reason and everything will turn out just fine.
