Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Kirven.
Dominique, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been thrifting since I was 12 years old with my aunt and grandma! We would hunt for treasures and timeless items! I believe then I knew my life would be involved with secondhand things! Making something new again, giving life to something old. I started this brand a year ago even though it took three years to get here, I’ve made it now into something I’ve never thought I would be! I feel in love with the thrifting experience! I knew I wanted to leave something in this world that would involve around sustainability and it so happens that I love fashion but hated fast made clothes AND that’s when I decided to indulge myself and others with sustainable fashion.
Now that it’s been a full year that we’ve been in business, it’s so surreal to see how far I’ve come! I’m currently the founder and owner of Thrifted Feels sustainable fashion brand. We are on IG and Facebook. You can also shop us live at the Hill Country Galleria.
Thrifted Feels is all about eco-fashion by focusing on the clothing that takes into account not only the environment but the working conditions of the people involved with making the clothes! The goal for Thrifted Feels is to increase the value of local products, to prolong the lifecycle of materials, to increase the value of timeless garments, to reduce the amount of waste and to reduce the harm to the environment.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been easy! Retail is changing and having a sustainable brand I’m realizing everyone is getting the board so we can ALL open the door for more thrift peers and peeps to join! However, I didn’t make it easier for myself either. It took me some time for me to really ask for help and allow people to pour into my success and my journey! My advice is allow others who truly believe in you and your vision to help you. Allow investors to invest even if you don’t have it together, act like you been there before!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Thrifted Feels – what should we know?
I’m a thrifter! I find gems and curate them to tell a story! I specialize in men and women’s wear from late 70s, 80s, and 90s! I like to blend and coordinate these garments with modern looks and styles (all Thrifted)! I style all sizes and people! What sets my brand apart is that we’re black-owned and operated we focus in on people of color as our Muse in our fashion story.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
If not now, then when? Giving yourself true time to focus on what you really want to do and be is critical to entrepreneurs.
