Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazelle Baker.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began to take hairstyling serious around age 15, my sophomore year of high school. After school, I’d go straight home knowing I had someone’s hair to do, and an opportunity to make some cash. One of my oldest sisters were a big influence on me deciding to become a hairstylist. She was the “go-to” person when we needed our hair done, but some days she would be too busy so my only options would be to wait or do something myself. Once I saw my true talent, it was a wrap. I began doing my own hair the majority of the time, gaining customers and clients. Early 2017, I created a hair product line (Essential Luxe Hair Care), beginning with an edge control made with organic ingredients. With my first pregnancy, I slowly stopped promoting the product and took a break. A few months after giving birth to my daughter, January 2018, I began making and selling wigs, lace wigs along with hairstyling. During the end of my pregnancy, I would sit and watch countless YouTube videos/tutorials of all kind. As of today, I’ve made & sold over 80 wigs and counting.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
By far, it has not been a smooth road as all our most goals & dreams come with challenges and obstacles. Some of the struggles were getting my business out there(known), financing, marketing & promoting regularly. My advice for young women, women period that is starting their journey is to never let anyone dim the light that’s shining above your goals, dreams, and aspirations. Sometimes, doubt from an outsider can be that push you need to succeed. Doing something you love will never be easy or smooth sailing in today’s ever-changing world. Stay focused, determined because it will definitely pay off.
We’d love to hear more about Essential Luxury Wigs.
I mainly make and sell wigs, & hairstyling in between. I’ve been known for doing hair for about 12 years or longer. I am most proud of just being an entrepreneur, and following my dreams. My originality is what sweets me apart from others. I want my creativity to stand out from others.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
All women that are working hard to make a living for themselves & their family have inspired me in some form or fashion. This guy on Instagram by the name of Andre Cavasier (NY) has been an inspiration, as well as other women I come across.
