Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Roach.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Katy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up always loving clothes and anything to do with it. I had an older sister and would find myself in her closet more times than not, trying on endless amounts of clothes and seeing what paired together. As I grew up and went off to high school, I was introduced to a whole new amount of style and influence around me. I went to a fairly wealthy high school and I was one of the girls that was, well – not wealthy, lol! I felt so discouraged and kind of lost sight of my passion for fashion. Being surrounded by so much wealth and fabulous clothes, I felt that there was no way I could live up to that. One day, I had a class mate that I had never talked to, come up and say, ‘I love how you are just like me and dress so cute, I always can’t wait to see what you wear each day’. That stuck with me and I realized that this was my calling. I am the everyday American girl. I am not wealthy beyond belief, I work, I am a wife, I take care of our home and I can look good doing all of that, at most importantly, at a good price. My goal ever since that day has been to inspire women around me and let them know that you can feel pretty and well dressed without going broke.
Has it been a smooth road?
If you asked me this in the midst of high school, I would have said that it was the bumpiest road ever. If you ask me know, I look back and think that I was pretty blessed and thankful for my journey. In high school, I felt very lost. I did not fit in with a lot of the cliques around me and I was just trying to figure myself out. I had a lot of good friends but never found myself going to parties or things like that all of the time. I struggled a lot with acne and my physical appearance and I let that hold me back a lot. After graduating high school, things began to smooth out and I met my husband and got married shortly after. We have been married three years and I have never felt more secure in my skin than I do know. I am sharing my love for fashion with girls all over the world and have never felt more fulfilled. If I were to give any advise to the young women reading this, I would say – you are your biggest critic. Be confident in who you are. For every critic around you, there are a million other people praising you. Do not get caught up on one negative comment and know that every girl around you is struggling just as much, we all just hide it differently. Support the girls around you and never give up on yourself.
We’d love to hear more about Living My Best Style.
So I have been up, around, down and sideways when it comes to school and work. I just cannot seem to get settled. I got married right out of high school and my husband was in the military so that caused a lot of moving. Since we were moving around, I had to take only classes. I originally wanted to go to school for nursing but since you can’t take nursing online, I decided that I would go with business. Well, half way through that, my husband was medically discharged from the military and we moved home – great, I can start nursing again! Well, I did just that. About 6 months in, I just felt such a void. I knew that this was not my calling and that I wanted to be a blogger or work in the fashion industry. One night, I rolled over and told my husband that I wanted to put school on the back burner and start a blog. Ever since that day, I have worked nonstop on this dream and have never felt more whole in my life. This is my calling and this is what I do. I am proud to be a young girl that is pursuing her dreams and showing others that it is okay to do that. I love that I am a blogger for the every day girl and find affordable items for my followers. I am as transparent as it comes with my followers and brand, I feel that it makes the world of difference. What you see is what you get and that will never change for me and my brand.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I feel that the biggest barriers for female leadership today are the stereotypes. We are all set in this mentality that women are the homemakers or women just have the cute ideas and that’s all they have to offer. Women can do it all. They have the cute ideas, they have the drive, they have the brains and they can do anything. I am building my brand from the ground up. That includes the brainstorming of fashion, the accounting, the website coding, all of it. I am a women and I am doing it all. I offer bring more to the table than just fashion. I bring drive and skill and talent. I feel that female leadership is on the rise and people are begging to see just how powerful, persuasive, intellectual and talented women are.
