Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Jameson, Ph.D.
Dr. Jameson, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My career began in schools. I was the Upper School Social/Emotional Counselor at a private, independent school in North Dallas for many years. I loved this experience, as I never knew what student was walking in with what problem on any given day. I was the only counselor for about 400 students so I was met with everything from break-ups to grief counseling. It was intense but that experience is what made me fall in love with working with adolescents. Their experiences are so complicated during a really intense time of life. Helping them navigate difficulties with a brain that is still in development is never dull. I find adolescence fascinating! I now have a private practice in North Dallas where I continue to see adolescents, as well as adults, couples and families.
Has it been a smooth road?
The field of mental health is finally starting to take center stage in our culture. Headlines, TV shows, politicians, celebrities, religious leaders, and so many others are now talking about mental health in a really healthy way! Our field is booming and so many more people are reaching out for help. Schools, businesses and churches are offering more and more resources for our communities. It’s a really exciting time to be a part of this movement in mental health awareness and education.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Professionally, I have two roles: I’m a therapist, where I sit in the chair across from individuals, couples, and families and help them find ways to live their best life and work through their specific challenges. My second role is that of a public speaker. I’m invited to businesses, schools, churches, conferences, hospitals, non-profits and even homes to talk about mental health issues as they related to teens, families and personal growth. Being a part of the therapeutic process is satisfying, but educating audiences about mental health issues, parenting, and personal growth is a way to spread the message to larger audiences and help more people. I love both roles equally and I’m grateful to do both on a weekly basis here in Dallas and around the country.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women are well positioned for ANY opportunity in business, but sometimes they need encouragement to believe this is so! Helping all women and men to understand this needs to be messaged over and over and over. Women empower women. Let’s support each other in whatever goals we set for ourselves. Stronger women, better world!
