Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Phillips.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Taylor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started A Pearl Kind of Girl as a way to fill a creative void in college. Photography and design have always been hobbies, so blogging was a natural addition to my life. At the time, the blogging world looked very different (Instagram was brand new) and I have enjoyed watching the space grow into what it is today. After graduation, I moved back home to Dallas, where I work full time in marketing and I am married to my “photographer” Alex. I continue to blog in hopes to inspire and provide knowledge everyone who visits A Pearl Kind of Girl.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is never easy to put yourself out there and start something on your own. It will quickly become clear who your friends are and you will want to keep them close. Sometimes, it is hard to hear or read what others have to say about you. If you don’t take criticism personally and keeping doing what you enjoy, the journey will be much more enjoyable.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about A Pearl Kind of Girl – what should we know?
A Pearl Kind of Girl is primarily a style blog but I sprinkle in some cooking, beauty, travel and home decor content. I think the wide variety of content available on my blog and depth I put into each post makes my blog stand out. I am not going to share an outfit, product, recipe or hotel if I don’t really love it myself. A great deal of research and trial and error go into each one of my posts.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking does not come naturally to me. In the right setting, I can be very outgoing, but I am very shy at first. I have had to learn to really step out of my comfort zone to start conversations with fellow bloggers. There are some days when it is the last thing you want to do and it is okay to go home, but networking will make all the difference to move forward.
