Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Lawrence.
Valerie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It started with me finally buy these glitter lip kits that I had been wanting to try forever! The company I bought them from reached out to me shortly after and asked if I would be interested in working with them. Of course, I said yes because, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was out of work. Not only did COVID-19 put me out of work but it also delayed me going esthetics school.
Since I had so much extra time on my hands, I decided to order a couple of books to pass the time and the one book that inspired me, in particular, was Baby Girl Manifest The Life You Want by B. Simone. She really got my gears working and kicked my brain into overdrive. It made me think about and want things I never even imagined. I was blessed with the opportunity to be able to start school online, so I did. I started thinking about what I could to make money while I’m in school and that’s when I got into microblading and lash extensions. Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say it’s been a smooth road but it hasn’t and that’s okay. I struggled with finding a good location to work at and getting my business off the ground. It’s still in the beginning stages so I’m having to trial and error different ways to appeal to people and build my clientele. The hardest part is getting clients when you’re just starting out. Also, it’s difficult to get people to be interested in glitter lip kits when most people aren’t leaving the house, masks are mandatory, and nothing social is open.
Please tell us about Glammed x Vee.
Glammed x Vee started with me being an esthetics student looking to make a side hustle. I do microblading, lash extensions, brow tint, lash tint, waxing, and facials, but specialize in microblading . I’m most proud of the love and support I’ve gotten so far. I’m also bey proud of myself. Never in a million years did I think this is where I would be in life but I’m enjoying it and I’m happy. That’s one of your biggest fears when you start a business. Your mind starts racing with negative what-ifs, and if you let those consume you, you’ll never make it. What sets me apart is my eagerness to learn and passion to succeed. I owe it to myself to be the best version of me and give my clients my best 100% of the time. I’ve been to college and did the four-year thing, but it didn’t fuel me. It wasn’t my passion. Once I got into this industry, it felt like everything was finally coming together and I felt like I had a true purpose.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was going off to Las Vegas, Nevada, to see my family every summer.
