Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Blosch.
Victoria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been creative, obsessing with painting and drawing at a young age. But my true creative journey, I think, began in college at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene. I had originally set out to study Photography, and I still absolutely love my camera, but I took many painting, drawing, printmaking, and graphic design classes and I just fell in love with it all. One of my best friends, who is two years older than me, was a graphic design major and had an internship at HSU with the Student Life Department. When she graduated, she recommended me to her boss as the next graphic design intern. I don’t think I’ve ever even mentioned to her how that one action probably changed my entire path! It truly did. I realized I could combine all my artistic passions with graphic design and I’ve been doing it ever since!
After college, I was the in-house graphic designer for a few companies that really challenged me in so many different ways that I’m thankful for. I connected with several vendors and learned a lot about production, got to be hands-on in a marketing team, provided guidance on brand development and maintenance, and more.
I’ve always had an obsession with local shops like boutiques, florists, coffee shops, bakeries and I had developed a really distinct style that fit those businesses so much more than my corporate position. On top of that, I had also grown a really strong passion for branding and how well-crafted branding could really reflect the personality of a business. I started taking on freelance projects on the side and eventually, it turned into full-time.
Has it been a smooth road?
I wish it was, but it never is! At first, when I began freelancing, I was taking any and every job. I was doing random projects like billboards, trade show banners, flyers, etc. Just a lot of really random things that I wasn’t necessarily proud of adding to my portfolio. I knew the importance of really niching yourself to attract ideal clients but didn’t fully embrace that until 4-5 months in. I started focusing on my website and highlighting only my core offerings, and also put time into my social media presence. Because I have such a distinct style and was able to clearly communicate what it is I do, my design queue began booking up!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I create well-developed, heartfelt branding for small businesses that truly showcases the passion and personality behind each of them. Good branding is so much more than a logo. There are so many elements including your typography, color palette, brand imagery, and overall look and feel that come together to create your brand. I love being able to creatively tell the story of a business through brand design!
There are so many resources out there for pre-made or semi-custom logos that a lot of businesses opt for. However, branding is an investment because of how it can powerfully connect with your customers before they even click through to your website or walk into your store! You can’t get that from cookie-cutter logos. On average, I typically spend 4-6 weeks with business owners on full brand projects, which includes an in-depth dive into what your business is and the “why” behind what they do.
I specialize in illustrative branding, which includes a lot of hand-drawn elements as visual pieces. I’m very passionate about creating each and every component from scratch instead of using pre-purchased graphics. Every client I work with gets a fully customized brand design.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our world is shifting more and more towards the digital realm each day, and the need for a strong digital presence is growing with it! Social media has also played such a large role in reaching customers and clients in a visual way. I think the importance of well-designed brand identity will continue to be a factor that allows small businesses to stand out amongst competitors.
