Meet Whitney Kilpatrick of Foiled Studio in Downtown Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Kilpatrick.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Whitney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in the beginning stages of YouTube, I quickly fell in love with all things beauty. It started with every braid you can imagine and DIY smokey eyes. After attending a high school cosmetology program, I was able to obtain my cosmetology license at 17! I started out working for a small commission style salon in the suburbs of Fort Worth.

I quickly grew there, they were a level based salon and within a few short years, I was able to climb to the top. Knowing that “top hairstylist” wasn’t the end of the road for me, I started for look my next venture. In February of 2019, I started my very own studio suite inside of Novak Hair Studios called Foiled Studio. Within the last year, I have grown from a one-person operation to a three-person team! We are currently working on building our brand and becoming the best beauty gurus to service DFW.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If it were easy everyone would do it, right?

I definitely had some challenges, my first major challenge was convincing my friends and family that the beauty industry was a respectable and well-paying industry. Unfortunately, a lot of artistic careers don’t get taken seriously. Because my parents weren’t supportive of the industry, I had to come up with the funds myself. Luckily I had a boss that let me work off my tuition! I had a grandfather tell me hairdressing was the equivalent to ditch digging. When I told people I joining the Beauty Industry, most people asked me what my back up plan was. Or if I planned on going to college to get a “real job”. Luckily for me, I don’t like getting told what to do so these comments were just fuel for my fire.

Another major obstacle was figuring out my next big move. I know deep down that I am made for more. But I was very comfortable and good at being a hairstylist. That little voice in the back of my head kept saying growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone. So I started looking for ways to start my own operation! So first I needed to find my dream location to build my team. Having very high expectations for my business I knew I couldn’t just operate anywhere. I wanted to be surrounded by men and women who inspire me, and I wanted a place that my clients would be spoiled.

After much research, in February of 2019, I found Novak Hair Studios, a salon concept I had never seen before. Novak is the perfect blend, it’s a well-oiled machine that allows my guests to have an exceptional experience while also letting the artist have creative freedoms. It is here that I have been able to grow a team and cultivate my brand.

I believe that this is just the beginning for us and we have so many great things in the works for 2020.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As the digital world is becoming more and more relevant we are evolving as well. We are planning on moving a portion of our business online to reach a new target market, other hairstylists! I know there is a young girl or guy out there that are drawn to the beauty industry and someone is telling them that they need a real job if they want to be successful. I had a mentor early on that showed me what was possible behind the chair and her accomplishments were my goals to surpass.

My hope is to be that inspiration for someone else. I want to change the stereotype and clean up an industry that deserves so much more respect. I know that I can only make a small change in the Beauty Industry with just us three. So in 2020, the digital world is our oyster. Look out for us because we are coming in HOT!
