Rising Stars: Meet Jessica Mills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Mills.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been a Creative, a quality inherited from my dad who loved architecture and used to draw very elaborate Sci-Fi cities in his spare time. I made movies with our VHS recorder and wanted to go to film school until my sister explained that it wasn’t a practical career choice. So off I went following her footsteps into Corporate Reinsurance. Although I stayed in the industry for nearly 20 years, believe it or not, Insurance wasn’t my passion.

I’m nostalgic because as a young person, I took advantage of the concept of time. I thought my elders would live forever. So, Jessica Mills Photography is a love letter to my family. If I could go back in time, I’d photograph every family member, especially my parents and grandparents, from the time before we met. When they were young. I want to document their existence, their strength, their loveliness throughout their life. And since I cannot, I have decided to share my secret wish with others. During a portrait session, I photograph from the point of view of a sister, a daughter, a mother, a granddaughter. I want each of my clients to look and feel their best. Imagining that one day they will show their portraits to their grandkids and say with pride, “this was me.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Balancing motherhood while being a Founder is a work in progress. My kids have lived through three career iterations: stay-at-home mom, working in corporate America and building my own business. By far their favorite was the mom who dedicated 1,000% to them, but they’re learning to share.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a portrait and headshot photographer. I like to call my style a modern take on studio portraits. The manner in which the everyday person ought to be remembered, chic and confident, whether it’s their portrait or brand messaging.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I hope for the best in others. I want my clients to see how beautiful they are. I genuinely want people to succeed and fulfill their dreams. This is the reason why I began taking headshots. I identify with job seekers—kids who were inexperienced yet eager to learn, professionals who have a resume full of experience but just can’t get their resume noticed because it’s sitting amongst 100 other applications. Competition is fierce! I want to put an end to the generic silhouette on LinkedIn and headshots where people you’re standing with are cropped out. I photograph headshots to help a young person get that first job, for someone else to elevate their career, and to help a business owner expand their client base.
