Today we’d like to introduce you to Kassie Wisener.
Hi Kassie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I went to school at Ogle in Hurst, TX. Then moved to Bremerton, WA and got married. I worked for a family-owned salon Terra Zen. Very much a Navy town. I learned a lot from the other four girls I worked with. It was a great but very short experience as I found out I pregnant with my oldest son. I moved back home to Fort Worth to be with my family while my ex was overseas.
After having my son in 2011, I started working for Ulta. I wasn’t really sure where it would take me as I was only working three days a week because being a mom was important to me. I grew a lot in the next couple years moved up through the Levels of stylist. Many talks with my Store Manager Laure about what was the best route for me to grow more as a stylist. She sat out many sparks in my head to push to become an Elite stylist which at the time meant hitting 100k in services in one year. At the time I started working towards this it was 2014 and I had just became a single mom of two. I had to figure out how to support them and myself. The best part of Ulta was the hands-on training that was all paid for and the ease of building a wonderful clientele that I adore. The support of my clients through every step was amazing.
In 2015, I became a Redken Certified Colorist. Then hitting the next goal of Elite Stylist two years in a row 2016 and 2017. In 2017, I decided I was secure enough to step out on my own and open my own salon suite. I have now been on my own for three years. I love every bit of it. December 2019, I applied to be a Color Consultant for Wella and was hired on the day after my technical interview, which was the most nerve-wracking interview of my life. My goal has always been to keep growing and moving forward. 2020 was crazy and all over the place. Between the Pandemic closing salons, getting engaged and my last and final baby that was born at 34 weeks. I learned how much support I have from my clientele. 2021 is the year of more growth, though. I plan to make one more big step and get a bigger salon by the end of the year. I love where I am at but have outgrown my tiny suite. No worries, only moving in walking distance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is ever smooth if you want to grow. You have to push boundaries to get there. Most of my deep struggles have been personal not necessarily career-based. I had to figure out how to balance being a mom and also supporting them. I, as a single mom, bought a brand new house in 2015 and if it wasn’t for my dedication to my clients and salon, I would have never gotten there on my own.
When it comes to my struggles in my career anyone that knows me knows I tend to have problem of saying no. If you needed me to take a client or my client ask for more, I will almost always say yes. My third child taught me to set the most boundaries which has created some challenges in the salon. I only allow myself a four day work week so I can balance family and salon life. Telling someone I couldn’t because that was my day off was hard. It has gotten easier and when I explain they understand. I sat out a time during my days off to answer and check my work phone so I can allow myself to fully be there with my family.
I need to be better at taking pictures of my work. Which is part of my goals for the next year when I get my bigger space. My suite is small so it can be trying to take photos in.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am very creative and artistic, seeing as how this is my creative outlet for me personally. This is a passion. I strive to meet my clients expectation for any service. I have been trained on Redken color from the start. Hair color is an art and something to be creative about. No matter the simplest color to the most extreme. I love hearing the client comment how this is the first time someone understood them or this is exactly what I was wanting when they didn’t know how to explain it.
I have also specialized in a Wedding and Special Occasion styles since Cosmetology school. This has been something I have excelled at from the beginning. I strive to match the style they are looking for, and do nothing short or pleasing the client on such a special day.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
