Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyrik Hunter.
Hi Lyrik Hunter, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
We (The Brown Sugah Lounge Family) initially started, right before the pandemic hit, in an effort to provide a nice night of poetry to the women in our community. Shortly after we began offering a space where expression in the form of poetry was welcomed and encouraged, we noticed that this was something that was starting to ignite change, healing and support in ways that expanded well past what we expected. What was happening to us and the people around us was something necessary and we could not let our people down. Currently we are nearing our 2nd year anniversary (June) and we have consistently met our growth goals in selling out our monthly shows, forming meaningful collaborations and poetry relationships and giving back to our community through charitable donations, support and fundraising. Our goal is to continue growing in our efforts in maintaining a strong presence in our community and across the world. We strive to touch as many lives as possible, by promoting and encouraging healthy ways to express, release and heal, while also supporting others in our community who share the same vision (or similar) and believe in the therapeutic benefit and importance in providing a safe place and platform for all expressions of poetry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh it hasn’t been easy, but we didn’t expect it to be. We understand that sometimes things don’t always go the way we plan, but the key is staying focused and true to our vision and goals. Some of the issues we’ve run into would be things like finding the most fitting and convenient venue, building a reliable and strong team, legitimizing our business, etc… It’s safe to say that we’ve run into some speed bumps along the way, but we are (and will continue to be) determined to stay the course in our journey and we are confident in the fact that what we have to offer, encourages positive and healthy growth for our team, as well as our community.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My birth name is, Krystal, but in the social/poetry/music world, most know me as “LyriK Hunter”, (The poet that sings). I’ve always been drawn to poetry, art and creative expression. As a child, I used creative writing, poetry and music as an outlet, which provided me with the freedom to express and in many situations, heal, learn and grow. I’m known best for my consistent positive attitude, ability to see the good in all situations, and desire and will to promote good vibes, healthy communication, and understanding. I am most proud of myself for overcoming my fear of stage fright and public speaking, through performance poetry (Spoken Word) and for becoming more confident in my abilities, talents, and gifts, which has contributed to my ability to make a difference in the lives of others around me.
What sets me apart from others, is my ability to tell a vivid story through my signature style of poetry, that I call #MusicPoetry. This translates to #LifeTherapy, for me, because in my darkest hour of depression and doubt, Music gave me life and Poetry gave me therapy. I am beyond thankful for that. I am very proud to be able to confidently state that I simply have no desire to compete with anyone, except myself. My only goal is to be better than the day before and provide a platform that allows all creatives to shine and share our journey without negative boundaries or influence, but only in Peace, Love and Light!!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As far as my personal growth, I see greatness, success, and Unity. I see more public speaking, book releases, new businesses, and collaborative growth on the horizon. What I predict, in the industry of the arts, specifically poetry, is that by staying focused on the ability to build strong foundational relationships in the poetry community, we can bring more attention to the art of poetry and creative expression, in ways that will require the world to take a moment to reflect on how we influence those around us and how effective that influence can be when we set out to be the change that we want to see. The biggest change that I look forward to seeing, is in the way we support, encourage and uplift each other. This is something that has always been a bit strange in Dallas, when it comes to arts an entertainment. Those of us who know the importance of support and encouragement, realize that having united connections, can make a world of a difference, and the outcome from that is bound to be nothing but greatness and excellence!!!
