Rising Stars: Meet Sergio Ruiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Ruiz.

Hi Sergio, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started drawing ever since I could hold a crayon. I began to improve my techniques in middle school and throughout high school. My mom has always been very supportive in my path of creativity. I remember when I was in middle school, she started buying me anatomy books, drawing books, portrait technique books and other items to help hone my skill. I have tried many forms of art mediums, I even had a few art galleries and showcases after high school to gain exposure. One of my first jobs was Anchor Blue at Town East Mall, I was broke at the time and couldn’t afford supplies. I figured out that instead of buying canvases, I would take the old window advertisements and cut them up and staple them over frames that I put together and made my own. I saved so much money doing that and was able to reuse something that was just being thrown away. I continue to experiment, learn and improve on all types of art.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Art is a slow process. It takes dedication and patience. You learn and improve over time. I have worked the night shift for several years, so taking the time to paint can be difficult when you’re trying to catch up on sleep and coffee helps a lot. I have to make sure I get enough sleep so I can safely work while trying to meet deadlines for commissioned projects.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My main source of income at the moment to provide for my wife and me is welding for a company that makes metal displays for major retailers like The Home Depot, Walmart, and Petco. During my off time, I paint, sketch, and design. Next year, I will be releasing my sofubi art figure, Jupiter Boy. Sofubi is a Japanese form of soft vinyl figures. I am saving up a lot of my paintings for a planned art show sometime in the near future. Jupiter Boy and the art show are my main focus at the moment.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t give up on creating. Always push yourself. Make tons of artwork to find out what works for you. Try not to take too long of breaks between projects or you will find it hard for you to finish them. Remember, if you like it there are always more people with the same mindset and like the same things as you. Keep busy!
