Rising Stars: Meet Terrance Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrance Williams.

Hi Terrance, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I am officially in year two of running my small business, Terrance Williams Designs, full time! Back in February 2020, I launched my website and despite the pandemic and the uncertainty of the world, I was still able to have a really successful year! I started my business back in 2014 as a side hustle and passion project and have been able to grow it to the success it is today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Year two has been more challenging than year one because I have to keep the momentum going. The first year was a great learning experience because I experienced so many firsts, so many highs, and so many lows. One of the biggest struggles from the first year was not being able to keep up with supply and demand. I am a one-man show and my pieces are all handmade. I would have huge influxes of orders, which I was grateful for, but then having to sew and ship all those orders sometimes took longer than expected. Thankfully this year I have more help and a smoother system for getting things done. For the second year, the biggest struggle is keeping people coming back and attracting more people to buy and support. The goal is always to have a return customer, so the focus is always on creating products and pieces that will inspire a purchase! Having to compete with myself and my goals from last year is another big challenge!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Terrance Williams Designs makes ethically sourced and sustainably produced clothing and accessories ranging from caftan dresses, headbands, dusters, clutches, purses, and more! My brand really focuses on topics and issues that are important to me. Sustainability is at the core of my business and what I do, so the products are ethically sourced and sustainably produced. I also advocate for inclusivity. My brand is size inclusive and genderless. I want anyone and everyone to feel comfortable in the clothing and accessories that they purchase from me. 5% of sales also go to initiatives and organizations that are removing carbon from the atmosphere. This is just one of the many ways that my business is promoting and advocating for sustainability!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Seeing customers wearing my designs and having them tell me how beautiful and confident they feel. I’ve had people with cancer buy my headbands and tell me they finally feel confident even though they have little to no hair. I’ve had people in wheelchairs buy my items and say they feel so beautiful and confident in my pieces. Knowing that the things that I make help make people feel beautiful and confident makes me the most happy.
