Meet Robyn Pope of Haute Dog Pet Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Pope.

Robyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Little known secret, I actually started in a Crime Scene Photography class! While a lot of photographers began with the creative eye and then learn the technical aspects such as composition and exposure, I learned all of the rules first and then decided how I wanted to break them artistically. Now I am a Certified Professional Photographer, an active member of the national and Dallas chapters of Professional Photographers of America, and in 2016 I was awarded the Bronze Medal at the elite International Photographic Competition. In addition to formal photography training, I have over ten years of experience working with dog training and behavior — from search and rescue to therapy work, obedience to confidence building. It all plays together to be able to elicit the reactions and personality from the dogs, have an artistic vision in mind, and know the technical aspect to bring it to life!

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a constant learning experience and one that I hope never ends! In the beginning, I thought it was just about being good with dogs and knowing how to use a camera, but there is SO much more that goes into owning and running a successful and sustainable business. Some of it is fun – like pushing myself to learn new photographic techniques – and some of it is just necessity – like insurance and taxes. I think being a successful pet photographer requires equal parts knowledge of animal behavior, business acumen, and photography skill.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Haute Dog Pet Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Haute Dog Pet Photography’s signature is bold colors, dynamic angles, and avant-garde lighting. I love using vibrant colors and larger-than-life perspectives to draw out the personalities of the dogs I get to work with. They all have a unique story and I’m honored when my clients choose me to tell it. To their owners, these dogs *are* larger than life, and to be able to embody that feeling in a photograph is priceless to me.

I’m constantly pushing our work to new levels to bring a unique product to our customers. We recently launched a whole new line of Light-Stitched™ Pet Portraits, using a technique unavailable from any other pet photographer. By individually lighting dozens of segments of the same object then digitally “stitching” them together, we’re creating spectacular artwork that can’t be created through traditional lighting techniques.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
WE LOVE DALLAS! My husband and I have lived all over the US, bouncing from coast to coast, and we settled here a little over a year ago with no plans to leave. Dallas is such a fun city and an amazing place for businesses like ours. It’s an incredibly pet-friendly city with so many locations to photograph. We’re constantly discovering new places to take our dogs hiking or out to eat and the scenery is so beautiful. We’ll photograph among the serene trees and waters of White Rock Lake one day and the graffiti walls or urban architecture the next. The entire Metroplex is our studio and there’s no shortage of unique places to see and things to do.

Summers can be challenging with the heat, but we photograph early in the morning or late in the evening to ensure the dogs and our clients are as comfortable as possible. We also offer ultra-posh studio sessions for those dogs who prefer to stay indoors.

Pricing:

  • Our sessions are $450 and include up to two hours of fully personalized pet photography at the DFW location of the client’s choosing, an extensive planning and design process, a photo session worked around the dog’s needs and behaviors, hours of meticulous photo editing and retouching, a reveal party complete with champagne to select the client’s favorite images, and a collection of digital files to share with all of the dog’s fans on social media. You can check out a video of the whole Dallas pet photography experience here
