Art & Life with Kevin Bowman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Bowman.

Kevin, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
It all started in 2008 when I transferred colleges to UNT. There I became the white boy that was always at the parties dancing and having a good time. From there a couple of my buddies and I went down to South Padre for spring break, and that’s where “WhiteBoyBoogie” was born. I was in the crowd at a party down there, and the DJ that was there was DJ Mr. Rogers, and he is the one who gave me the name. Basically, I was dancing in the crowd like normal, and he got on the mic and started saying, “Ayyyeee look at that white boy boogie, man that white boy can boogie.” As we know at that time the Dallas based dance was called the boogie, so he was basically saying, “look at that white boy dance.” After he yelled that a couple of times he said, “Ayyyee that’s WhiteBoyBoogie.” he basically combined the name whiteboy, and the verb boogie on the spot and WhiteBoyBoogie was born. After I got home from spring break I went and changed all of my social media handles to WhiteBoyBoogie and that was it.

Can you give our readers some background on your work?
First and foremost I’m an entertainer. Whether that be dancing like I used to do back in the boogie era or now DJing. I just enjoy putting on a good show for the people that come to party with me. I’ve always enjoyed music and dancing was always an outlet to express how I felt, and now I do that with my DJing. The inspiration I would tell other people is to follow your dreams and don’t ever give up on what you want to do.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
My definition of success would be doing what you want to do with your artistry and enjoying it. One of those things is making money doing the things you love to do, and I have been very blessed over the years to do so. But success to me is also bringing people together, from all different walks of life, and having them enjoy what you put in front of them. For many years that was dancing for me, and now it’s bringing people together through spinning music.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Right now I have two residencies where I DJ at. I DJ in Denton at Public House on Fry street on Friday nights and on Saturday nights I DJ at Stirr in Deep Ellum.
