Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Massey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Covenant Crafters in May 2003, with a lot of prayer and faith and zero knowledge of how to operate a business. I just knew I wanted to build good quality cabinets and furniture and make my customers happy. I had gone to school to be a police officer, and through life circumstances, my plans had been altered. My first shop was a two car garage that I quickly outgrew. A friend of mine allowed me to use about 800 square feet of an existing shop that he owned, and that’s when things really started to take off.
During the year and a half, I was there, I made some good contacts which opened the door to some great opportunities. Once we outgrew that 800 sq ft space, we moved to a 2000 sq ft building, and we remained there for nine years. For most of that time in our business, it was just me and a helper building and installing all the jobs. We would bring in friends from time to time if they needed work or to just make some extra money. My father-in-law even came to work with me for a couple of years.
In 2014, I hired my first full-time employee, who I had known for about 12 years. It was a real leap of faith to take on the financial responsibility, but we were so busy that it was a necessary step toward continued growth. By the end of 2014, we had 4 full-time employees and had outgrown our 2000 sq ft building. We were able to find a 9000 sq ft shop space to lease in a 19000 sq ft building in Mansfield, TX. New clients and builders were calling everyday, and we continued to expand.
Today, we have 12 full-time employees. We were blessed to be able to purchase and now occupy all of that 19,000 sq ft building. We currently build over 200 jobs per year. We have won the Super Service Award on Angie’s list for the past five years and are grateful to say that the majority of our business comes from satisfied clients telling their family and friends about us. We strive to operate this company with integrity and honesty and trust that God will take care of the rest.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our company’s journey has been a 15-year adventure with its share of ups and downs.
We’ve learned a great deal along the way. Perhaps our greatest struggle was from Nov. 2009- Feb 2013. Those 40 months, were the leanest and most difficult. Business had slowed to a crawl, and there wasn’t nearly enough money to pay the bills, but God got us through that time.
Now things, though bigger and busier, have their own set of new challenges, such as learning to manage 12 employees. Even though the difficult times, I am thankful for the challenges and obstacles, as it has taught me to have greater faith in all circumstances.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Covenant Crafters – what should we know?
We build custom cabinets and furniture for residential and commercial clients. We work with builders and homeowners to create a custom look for their project. We can help with a small bathroom job all the way up to a full restaurant.
We can build a custom bed or a table to fit a specific space. We use the highest quality material and put the extra effort to build each project to our standards. I am proud of our products and always happy to show potential clients our build process and what makes us different than other companies.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God gets the credit. Without my faith and trust in Him, we wouldn’t be where we are today. My wife has been by my side and a tremendous partner for the past 13 years.
We work great together, and I really could not imagine doing this with anyone else. We have several business mentors that have helped us along the way and have been a great source of wisdom for us through the years.
