Meet Keite Young of Medicine Man Revival in Deep Ellum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keite Young.

The raw vocal power of Keite Young and the grimy, thick production style of Jason Burt come together to form Medicine Man Revival, the newest Dallas musical offering.

Medicine Man Revival’s sound is best described as Future Soul – an innovative blend of gospel, R&B, and hip-hop. Backed by some of the best musicians in Dallas, the duo forms their own sound that brings people to their feet and energizes any size venue. For the last three years, Keite Young has been putting on the Medicine Man’s Traveling Revival, an opportunity for local musicians to showcase their talents to a new audience. Keite met Jason Burt at a Medicine Man Show in September of 2016 and a new version of the Revival was born.

The two started collaborating out of Modern Electric Sound Recorders in Dallas, TX after realizing they both had been working on solo material that would blend together and reinvent soul/hip-hop music. In the last few months, the duo has built out a library of soulful hip-hop tracks, recorded three music videos, and blown crowds away at every one of their live shows. The energetic response from their live shows allowed the band to secure a number of high profile shows including the ‘til Midnight series (May 19th, ‘17 -2,350 in attendance), New Year’s Eve at the Rustic (NYE ‘16 – 1,500 in attendance), a June residency at Swan Dive in Austin, as well as performing at the Budlight Summer Series at the Austin American Statesmen (July 19th, ’17 -1500 in attendance).

Medicine Man Revival combines the elements of the two hottest acts in Dallas right now – the New Southern sounds of the Texas Gentlemen (Jason Burt is a frequent collaborator with the group) and the Soul/R&B elements of Erykah Badu & The Gritz. On May 5th the Texas Gentlemen, RC & The Gritz, and MMR played to a crowd of 650 at the historic Granada Theater for a collaborative set to commemorate the release of MMR‘s latest single #DTOWNHUMP. Content is essential, and MMR produces engaging and geographically relevant material. “The Goldrush Session” showcases the duo’s favorite diner along with an acoustic rendition of “Bittersweet,” their first single.

MMR continues to define their brand, grow their network of relevant creators, and consistently deliver high-quality, targeted content for their web audience. Musical collaborators on the project include some the Texas Gentlemen (Nik Lee/Daniel Creamer), some of Erykah Badu’s Band (Tayron ), Justin “Lyons,” and Marcus “Mavtraxx” Robers as well as Ben Barajas! Medicine Man Revival has plans to continue to release singles in 2018. You can also hear the single “Medicine Man” and “#DTOWNHUMP” on KXT & KTCX.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road when you’re breaking new ground. Some of our initial hurdles were more organizational. We knew that to be a successful band, we had to structure our operations and aspirations as any other successful business would. We reimagined what success means for our music and committed our time, resources and energy to focus on our plan.

Once we proved consistent and persistent in those ways, we had to tackle what/who we associated ourselves with as well as what shows we should play in order to curate the brand that we could successfully build value in. The music was the easiest part, really.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Medicine Man Revival – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Essentially, we are a content company. We specialize in creating brandable content that promotes boundless love, healing, authenticity, coolness, passion and a celebratory attitude towards life and community. Our live show is ELECTRIC and dynamic. It’s probably our strongest asset.

I’m most proud of our ability to consistently project our vision and version of success whether on the stage, studio or social media. I believe this is what sets us apart from other creatives in Dallas. We spent a lot of time being clear and committing ourselves to a well-defined culture of openness and inclusion.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Dallas has such a history of innovation both creatively and corporately. It’s a very fertile ground for the “new” and is increasingly more suited to the future of content creation and corporate structure.

What’s most difficult for me regarding Dallas is that it takes such a massive effort to inform fellow Dallasites of what’s going on right under their noses.
