Meet Alex Stassen of Stassen Photography in Princeton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Stassen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve had a passion for photography ever since I was a little kid. I used to take my mom’s old 35mm and go around our farm taking pictures of everything, even though I didn’t know what I was doing. Seeing with a different perspective was my main goal. Most people aren’t aware of their surroundings, especially when they see the same things every day. If you show them something from a different vantage point they begin to see the beauty that is all around them.

I’ve taken this philosophy into my photography, and it is what keeps my passion alive. Capturing my clients in a moment that shows their emotion is my ultimate goal. Beautiful lighting, color, and composition are great, but if the client doesn’t get that feeling about their portraits, I’ve missed my mark.

I graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 2009 with a BA in Studio Arts and moved from Minnesota to Texas. I opened Stassen Photography at that time and began contracting to a sports photography company. Over the last 8 years I have worked with 3 different photography companies while growing Stassen Photography.

Seeing the photography business from all different positions has given me a unique look at the industry as a whole.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Becoming a professional photography company requires capital to acquire proper equipment. In order to stay competitive, there are frequent upgrades that are necessary as technology evolves.

The Photography market is saturated with “professional” photographers. It is sometimes difficult for clients to decipher who is actually a professional. With the quality of phone camera’s increasing, many people also feel that they can produce the same type of images.

Please tell us about Stassen Photography.
My primary focus is families. These come in many shapes and sizes from maternity, to newborns, to multi-generational families. I’m at a stage in life where many of my contemporaries are having kids, and I enjoy capturing their changing families.

I am most proud of my images conveying an emotion. When you look at my portraits I want you to feel something specific.

What sets me apart from other photographers is that I provide a personalized expertise from pre-session styling through to the finished product. I include styling guides with every session to ensure that the portraits are timeless and that my clients will love them for years to come.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over, I would have begun online marketing sooner.
