Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Crow.
Rachel, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have been a writer since high school where I first met pen to paper writing poetry. I wrote as a way to make sense of the chaotic secret life of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse I’d been living through since age six.
Through writing, I learned to connect with my feelings and gain comprehension of the world around me. Later my writing turned to prayers and soon advanced into a blog.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have found enjoyment in almost all types of art styles. While I dabble in pencil drawing and love painting with acrylics my main outlet is writing. I started a blog about four years ago called Rejoice and Crow where I take my love for color, photography, paint, and writing and mesh it all together.
I write about my day to day life but through my perspective as a Christian recovering from the effects of childhood sexual abuse. My story is unfortunately not unique, but I was given this gift of words and chose to use them to encourage others with a similar story. I write a lot about motherhood and how I am still being renewed every day. My prayer is when someone reads my blog that they can see themselves, that they can relate to the emotions or circumstances and most importantly that they are pointed back to Christ to find hope.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I had a friend tell me once if you connect to what you made then it’s worth keeping and that defines success to me. You have to love what you’re doing, what you’re making because others won’t love it if you don’t.
I also think to be successful it’s important to accept constructive criticism as well as look to others who are further down the road than you. It’s ok not to be perfect but to perfect your skill you have to be willing to lean on others for support, critique, and encouragement.
