Meet Jasmine Smith of WigMaTized in Lancaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Smith.

Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m currently 25 years old. I’m from Dallas, Tx. This amazing journey of mine started when I was 23 years old. Like any typical young person in their early 20s, you never just know what you want in life until you actually put the effort to make something happen & go for what you really want… I knew I loved the beauty industry period. I stayed getting my hair, nails & makeup done. I also watched my Mother do hair as a side hobby back in the day. It was in the year of 2017 that I enrolled in Ogle-Arlington Cosmetology Program in February.

Prior to that, I had just recently cut off a majority of my long beautiful hair *sigh* back in 2016. I don’t know why it was just a phase I went through honestly, lol. I made the decision in May a few months after being enrolled in beauty school to grow my hair back. There were so many cute styles that were coming back from the old days that required my REAL hair. Everybody that has cut their hair & decided to grow it back KNOWS there is an UGLY hair stage that you have to go through. I hated the ugly stage of hair growth. I had to think fast & long about the next step & how I was going to either hide my hair or rock my ugly hair stage. One day at school, I just thought: Ok, I’m going to just wear a wig until my hair grows back. Wigs were coming back in style, but they weren’t FULLY back. I made myself my first closure wig & I posted it on Facebook! Everybody loved it & I started getting comments & messages asking me, “Can you make me a wig?”

Basically, to make a long story short, I thank God, because never in a MILLION years would I have thought that one personal wig would have BLOWN up or made me start a career in making wigs. I completed 1500 hours in beauty school. I always had the mindset to remain humble & this is NOT your hobby but your successful BUSINESS! It’s a blessing how a humble mindset will take you so far & connect you with so many people. A lot of times, people think because you wear a wig either you’re losing hair or just bald headed. In all reality, a wig is just simply a good protective style for people that want to keep their hands out their head, harsh chemicals off their hair & people that don’t want to wear their hair but still want a REALISTIC look or people that change hairstyles EVERY week!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely NOT! Everyday is not always smiles & laughs. I’ve had so many challenges. There were days when I wanted to give up & wondered “Where do I go from here?” I was being hard on myself. We as people are our own MAJOR critics. I was trying to perfect my craft on my time & would get very frustrated & want to quit. They say our time is not our timing it’s God’s timing. It’s hard running a business on your own & trying to figure out what needs to be done NEXT. You just have to stay prayed up & MOTIVATED! I have a huge support system. Having a support system that just encourages me to keep going & that people you think are not watching are watching & definitely ROOTING FOR YOU!

Please tell us about WigMaTized.
WigMaTized specializes in Wigs or as some people called them units. I make Closure wigs & Frontals wigs. I have a hairline that will be dropping soon too. Everything is still in the works but it’s all coming together so beautifully for me. As a successful business owner, I’m proud of how successful WigMaTized has become. Like any other business, it has its slow days & weeks but overall it has been a perfect business for me. WigMaTized has its own way of doing things. It’s very unique & the work & quality speaks for itself. The WigMaTized owner would never make or do something for a customer that she wouldn’t wear or do herself! Must I mention EVERY unit is hand made, flat & neatly stitched! (Machine made wigs coming soon.)

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My most favorite memory from childhood was when I use to own this Barbie Doll cash register. You couldn’t tell me nothing, I had sooo much money, lol. I use to think “Jasmine one day, you’ll have your OWN business with a real cash register.” I never understood why I always said I wanted to be a cashier when I was younger, but now I kind of see! I wanted to have my OWN money & make my own money!
