Life and Work with Julie Do

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Do.

Julie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was surrounded by makeup, hair, and nails. The strong women in my life were all in the beauty industry so of course I was influenced. Since the age of four, I remember watching my mom do her makeup. I was so infatuated by everything and begged her to do my makeup as well. As I got older, I signed up for drill team not thinking anything of it, but that’s where I found myself and my love for dance and soon fall in love with my profession for makeup. I was known as the “drill team makeup artist.” I did all of my friend’s makeup before games, dances, homecoming, prom and I think that was actually the stepping stone for me. After high school, I was stuck with what I wanted to do with my life. I decided to go with dental hygiene because that career was solid. After one semester of taking classes, I knew that wasn’t the path for me. I knew that I LOVE doing makeup, and making other people feel beautiful. It was definitely my calling. I decided to enroll in esthetician school and I never looked back.

When I started to really get into makeup and learn about the industry, I actually started to learn more about myself. I never once thought that I could turn this hobby mine into something much more. This is my 5th year of being a freelance makeup artist and I wouldn’t change anything. I absolutely love what I do and I hope to keep on growing and building in my profession. I cannot see myself pursuing anything else. This has always been a dream of mine and I am beyond grateful to make this a reality and to be where I am today.

Has it been a smooth road?
So, the past five years has been such a growing and LEARNING experience. Each time I did a clients makeup, I felt like I was learning something new. I think just learning how to be more confident in myself was one of my biggest flaws. I am such a people pleaser and I want to please everyone I meet. I do tend to stress myself out when it comes to making sure that everything is perfect. My advice to anyone who is interested in becoming a makeup artist believes in yourself! The competition in this industry is very vast. There are so many amazing makeup artists out there and it is so easy to compare yourself to someone else. Just keep on practicing and you’ll get to where you want to be if you believe in yourself.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a freelance makeup artist. I specialize in weddings, quinceaneras, special events, photo shoots, homecoming, proms, and everyday wear! Just about everything under the sun. What I do take a lot of pride in is my work and my customer service.

I feel like my pricing is very affordable, but I have both quality and quantity.

With each application, I’m very meticulous about the blend, and the different colors. I want my clients to be “WOW’d” when I am finished doing their makeup. I do try my best to please all of my clients because I want them to feel even more beautiful by the time I am done.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Growing up, my parents always reminded me to work hard to get to where I wanted to be in life. I was constantly reminded that if I wanted to be successful in whatever I did, I need to put in twice the energy and time. I needed to do everything with my heart. They always motivated me and guided me whenever I felt lost. I was always pushed to be the best I can be and I definitely feel like it molded me into the person I am today. I am honestly forever grateful to have the most amazing parents and support system!
