Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Riera.
Gloria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in the retail banking industry back in 2003. I had the opportunity to work for some of the Goliaths in the retail banking world. When I applied for my first position in the banking industry, I felt as though I was underqualified. During my group interview for a position with one of the largest banks in the US and top 10 in the world, I was told by the recruiter that I was overqualified for the position I was applying for and she offered me a promotion, if you will. This was the way my career went in banking, often my hard work and drive led to promotions. I was able to gain knowledge and experience in all aspects of banking/finance and mortgage. Fast forward 12 years, four children later and I really needed to get in the far right lane and slow down. I began looking for a position that allowed flexibility, one where I could have the work/life balance that I yearned for. What happened next was indeed divine, enter Brian Riera, a mortgage loan officer who needed someone to manage his production. How my resume actually got in front of the hiring manager was the divine part, and really is a story that deserves a meeting over tea to be told. I joined Brian’s team in 2015, we had similar values and a respect for family time. At the time, It felt like I was taking a risk by joining the team. I now know it was one of the best decisions I could have made, not only for my career but for my personal life as well. Nearly four years later, and we are rockin’ and rollin’.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest challenge was most definitely trying to find a work/life balance. I had been a single income household for a long time and the need to provide seem to always take a front seat. I was able to attend my children’s softball and baseball games, wrestling matches, school plays, concerts, etc. but not without the guilt of leaving my work too soon. The few times I may have had to be late or miss travel opportunities for their sports because of my career, Iwas left once again feeling guilty. The struggle to balance work and my life was a difficult one. But I am so grateful that that is no longer a weight I carry around.
