Life and Work with Taja Danielle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taja Danielle.

Taja, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From a very young age, I knew that I wanted to be in the spotlight. As I got older, I discovered multiple opportunities to ensure just that, from attending the Barbizon School of Modeling in Dallas to performing chorally throughout elementary, middle, and high school. I officially started pursuing a professional music career at the age of 18. I landed an independent record deal with Zenobia Records, based in California at the age of 20 and concurrently began working with TWT management. I am pretty fresh in the game but I am learning and growing as I navigate through this doggedly competitive industry. Since being signed, I have released my first single ‘Soulfully Free’ and am currently working on an EP with two to three more singles which will hopefully be released before the end of the year! Music is my love! I hope to inspire and uplift people with my songs. It’s just amazing for me to have this creative talent and to be able to share it with many. It makes life so much more meaningful knowing that I can use what I was gifted with to perhaps put a smile on someone’s face.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Thus far it has been mostly a smooth road. It’s not easy starting out in the entertainment industry as an emerging artist, let alone one signed to an independent label. The most difficult thing my team and I have encountered is being able to find a suitable producer for me to work with for an extended period of time to complete my EP project. It’s only a minor setback, however. I am also a college student, so that’s challenging to balance at times as well. It can be arduous but I would definitely encourage young women starting a music career to maintain a realistic and optimistic mindset. Know that it will be tough, things won’t go your way, and a lot of things will be out of your control but It will all be okay. Hold on to your optimism and passion if the music is truly what you love to do and do not be discouraged!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a singer-songwriter/lyricist, signed to Zenobia Records, an independent label based in California. I like to mix music genres and I see myself as a non-genre specific artist. I love all styles of music and I am not afraid to cross the lines into another style, and incorporate different musical elements. I believe that sets me apart from others in this industry! My single Soulfully Free has an R&B feel, but also Alternative and Jazz influenced. The song is about learning to be free within the boundaries of a relationship. You are free to be who you are naturally, free to grow and be emotional in the safety of a relationship. It is available for download on all major music platforms.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
The music industry, I feel stereotypes women sexually which can be a potential barrier to advancing one’s career. More often times than not, women in this industry who want to be recognized solely for music will have to combat this. I believe that you should not have to present yourself that way to be seen, to be heard or to be a leader in this industry. There are female artists who challenge the stereotyping and I applaud them on that for they are true leaders.
