Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Turner.
Kierra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first start cooking at the age of three. My grandmother had me in the kitchen early lol. I spent most of my summers and winter breaks in the east Texas with her; so if I was there I more than likely was in the kitchen helping. I learned how to make pound cake at the age of five. My aunt Chonita taught me how to preserve cakes at age ten. From then on out I just felt comfortable baking. Basically cooking and baking was my first love.
I initially started in 2014 baking for family events and friends. By 2016, I decided I wanted to have my own company and start brainstorming names that would stand out but would also make know that my company was a bakery. I came up with Sweet N Sugar. I started having my coworkers sample literally everything I made and they never got tired. I got with a friend that did graphic arts and gave him my vision and he came up with a temporary logo. As my orders grew, my mom who also does graphic arts made me a permanent logo, I made a Facebook business page because I was getting so many referrals and my website release is April 15. From there Sweet N Sugar just became it’s own.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. I like to perfect my deserts, so when something doesn’t look like I want it to look, I would start over. Frustration use to come with starting Sweet N Sugar but I have certainly grown out of that in these past four years. I think strategy was my hardest struggle. Like how I wanted to network. How big I wanted my company to grow. Do I want to build a website, etc.?
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sweet N Sugar story. Tell us more about the business.
Sweet N Sugar is a homemade cake company. Although our top priority is homemade cakes, we also specialize in cupcakes, brownies, cake cookies, cheesecakes, etc. We are mostly known for our honeybun cake and banana pudding cake. I most proud of my company because it is black owned. I noticed I don’t see a lot of black-owned cake companies in my area with storefronts for baking so I wanted to make that change. What sets me apart from others is social significance we have in the works restaurants that Sweet N Sugar will be sold at coming sooner than you think 🙂
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck but I do believe in blessings and lessons. So I have been blessed beyond measures of customers ordering, loving their order, and referring Sweet N Sugar out to other customers. Its been a blessing to grow this far just by word of mouth.
