Art & Life with Emily Galusha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Galusha.

Emily, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Born and raised in central Arkansas, my artwork is rooted in my upbringing as well as relationships, Nature, and the subconscious. I attended the University of Oklahoma at Norman where I studied Ballet Pedagogy before acquiring my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville located in the Ozark Mountains.

I grew up in Little Rock in a creative environment. My mother, an artist & art teacher, and father a “medicine man,” are both highly supportive of my creative endeavors. Flanked by two brothers who are artists (and film editors) themselves, I was influenced by various forms of art as well as my unique role as the only female child in our family. In my adult life, I have experienced a range of encounters, from travel to challenging relationships, that equally influence my expression. While exploring globally, I continue to hold strong to my Arkansas roots.

A recent experience that has propelled my career, as well as motivation, was a printmaking residency in Tern, Italy, at La Romita School of art studying under Kathy Brimberry of Flatbed Press and Suzi Davidoff, master printer located in the Chihuahuan Desert. Learning, absorbing, shifting through both strength and humility has allowed me to grow creatively.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Currently based in Austin, I am a Creative Manager and Lead Graphic Designer but spend the bulk of my time creating work for one of my three series:
• Pistols – Mixed media series pairing antique handguns pairing with nature. Each piece demonstrates the duality of masculine & feminine, mechanic & organic, antique & contemporary.
• Animal Dreams – Dreamlike observance of flora and fauna of regions I’ve traveled to, represented in watercolor. Shows support and appreciation for the Naturalist world and preserving what is around us.
• Undercurrents – An on-going mixed media creative study of the physical, psychological, philosophical, spiritual balance within ourselves. It is inspired and motivated by my experience with dance, figure drawing, as well as being a human being moving through life. Inhabit your body.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Simple but crucial – draw/write/create something every day. Our creativity is a muscle that weakens when unused. So tapping into that on a daily basis keeps us in touch with what’s going on inside our creative centers.

I’ve found a lot of growth in collaborating. Letting go of your work and allowing someone else to contribute or manipulate can be a great learning experience. When done correctly, collaborating is not 50-50, but both artists giving 100%.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I welcome feedback regarding any of my work. You can find my work at emilygalusha.com, and I am currently showing at Canopy and Kiki Nass in Austin as well as M2 Gallery in Little Rock.
