Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Robinson.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story started the day I was resurrected. I suffered three heart attacks over three days and died during the third attack. After volunteering for the American Heart Association for years, I noticed that there wasn’t a community connection between their organization and black people. Now don’t get me wrong AHA is a great organization, and we need them, but we also need BHA to engage with our people. I founded the non-profit initially as Rock Your Heart Society in 2017. We did events such as “Second’s In Red” and “Mommy & Me CPR,” but it didn’t have the impact I wanted it too, so I backed away from it to hear what God wanted me to do.
Unfortunately, that answer came when my 38-year old brothering law passed away suddenly from a hypertensive heart attack earlier this year. I was shocked and heartbroken. I can recall carrying his black suit to the car and thinking I wish he would have told me about his health. Maybe, I could have helped. It was at that moment I realized I was watching my funeral had I died from my heart attacks. My family is still grieving his death. I made a post that night and said what if I was the Black Heart Association like the AHA out of hurt and disappointment because I felt like people were not paying attention to the warnings. I didn’t think anything of it, but the next day God said you are BHA! I responded if I am, I need you to show up and show out!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has it been a smooth road yes and no but hey no road is! Everything is about perspective and trying to see things through God’s eyes. Yes, since I announced the name changed I have seen a shifted in my focus and momentum as far as people connecting to our efforts and sharing our post. I think the bumpy road is learning the ins and outs of being a non-profit, fundraising, and wearing several hats to keep the business afloat until all the pieces of the puzzle are in place.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Black Heart Association – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Black Heart Association is all about the prevention of heart disease and stroke as it relates to the black community. We are known for advocating, spreading awareness, and prevention. We are proud to fight for the thousands of minority men, women and children, and their loved ones, who will experience the negative impact of heart disease or stroke each year. As a survivor, I believe there is no one better to take up the mantle of reaching and awakening the heart of trauma achieve their greatest level of overall well-being through mental, physical, and emotional healing. What sets us apart is that we target one group of people but will help anyone but our data, research, and knowledge is all culture specific.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plans are many! (LOL) But on the agenda is education programs for our children for they are the future with our event Mommy & Me CPR & Wellness Event. We are also pushing for adults to take a break and breath at our Chasing Happiness Retreats happening March 2020.
