Life and Work with Megan Blount

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Blount.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Right out of high school, I went straight to a university because that is always what I’ve been told had to happen. I stayed for two years but I was completely unhappy. I couldn’t figure out which career direction I wanted to go in. I always knew I needed to have a creative outlet and I always knew I had a slight interest in the beauty industry but I never considered making a career out of it. Both my mom and dad had always embedded in my mind that whatever I chose to do for the rest of my life, to make sure I enjoy it. Finally, I made the decision to drop out of college and enroll in cosmetology school. I attended The Salon Professional Academy in Dallas, and absolutely fell in love with doing hair from day one. After I graduated in 2012, I moved back to Fort Worth and started working at a salon right away. Three years later, my restless heart took me to New York City where I was an on-demand stylist with BeGlammed. When it was time to move back home to Fort Worth again, I landed an amazing job at Panther City Salon and that is when my career really took off. I received an incredible education from other stylists at PCS and collected a wonderful clientele. I have now moved to a new salon at The Bees Knees Hair Studio where my clientele has grown even more! In the near future, I have big plans to move to Los Angeles where I hope to continue to grow as much as I can in this industry.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. There has been many times and situations when I’ve questioned if I even wanted to do hair at all or if I was really good enough. The beauty industry is cutthroat especially in big cities like NYC and LA. You have to surround yourself with like-minded people. There are people in this world who share the same dream as you and who want to help you get there together, you just have to find them! Yes, this career is very competitive, but there are people who believe there is room for everyone at the top and those are the type of people you want on your side.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Bees Knees Hair Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I do almost everything! Cutting and coloring for women, men, and children! I pride myself on my blonde clientele with highlights or balayage. I also have a handful of vivid color clients which is always fun to do. I specialize in cutting curly hair. I have naturally curly hair and have always struggled to find someone who really understands how to cut my curls, so I wanted to be that stylist for other curly hair clients to turn to. I enjoy specialty stylings such as braids and updos. I style for many weddings, proms, and any other special events.

I also volunteer for a non-profit organization called House of Hope for autism where I help cut hair for kids on the spectrum. It’s not always easy, actually, it’s never easy. Most people don’t think about something so mundane as getting a haircut to be difficult but to these kids, it is traumatic to go into an unfamiliar place and have an unfamiliar person be inside their bubble and tug at their hair. However, it is truly rewarding to do what I can to help these families manage a sense of normalcy in their lives.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
My advice to anyone starting a career in the beauty industry would be to never stop learning. Never stop taking classes. The beauty industry is constantly evolving. There will always be new trends, new products, new techniques to learn. And never be afraid to ask for help when you need it!
