Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Bohn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always had a passion for working out and being fit. In my 40s, I became an avid amateur bicycle racer including mountain, road, and cyclocross disciplines often against men 1/2 my age. My passion for CrossFit developed from the role it played in my personal recovery after having been hit by an F150 at 45mph while standing on the side of the road.
I had left my house around 5 pm for a quick training ride on some rural county roads when I came across another cyclist off the side of the road changing a flat. It was very hot out and we were just a mile from my house so I offered assistance and to call my wife if he needed a ride home. He noticed a truck about 1/2 mile down the road that was headed our way and called it to my attention. Noting that I was on the grave-edge of the road and that when riding I was on the road, I felt comfortable with my position as the truck approached. Unbeknownst to me, the driver was intoxicated and ultimately hit me at 45mph. The impact threw me 75 feet where I landed unconscious in a watery ditch. I was Careflighted to a local trauma center where I was in ICU for two weeks with a broken pelvis, 9 broken ribs, 3 vertebrae, a broken scapula, and countless internal injuries.
After three months of mending and needing to regain the ability to function day-to-day, I enrolled in CrossFit and quickly became an ambassador for the program. My passion lies in helping others, of all fitness levels, discover the incredible things they can accomplish physically through this program! As you can imagine, my knees took a beating and several surgeries later they were still limiting my abilities. Just last year, nine years after the accident, I had a total knee replacement of my right knee. The left is rough but I’m still getting by with it. Just weeks later I was already deadlifting, snatching, and even did pistols at 10 weeks post-op.
PUSH YOURSELF! Our bodies are amazing machines that respond to the inputs you give them!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any small business, we’ve made some mistakes and learned along the way. Our biggest lesson is that a CrossFit “box” is as much a community as it is a business! And a community is a lot like a raging river, you can’t turn a raging river but you can guide it if you have a plan and you’re thinking as you go…
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our mantra at Sanctum CrossFit is “Treat others as you would want to be treated.” This is exhibited by us offering open access to all members anytime the doors are open. Members can use our 6000 sqft facility anytime to work on their weaknesses instead of only following class programming. This is especially important for those interested in the sport of CrossFit and competing. In addition to the standard equipment (rowers, bikes, rigs, weights) we also stock all of the “toys” like Atlas stones, strongman yoke, jerk blocks, ski erg, echo bikes, reverse hyper, etc. And, we don’t have any hidden fees or complicated cancelation policies.
Most exciting is that we have recently expanded into an adjacent space to offer Sports Speed, Strength, and Agility and a Sports Recovery Center with Cryotherapy, Compression Therapy, Chiropractic, and Massage. We service athletes from middle school age, high school, collegiate, and professional level with several of the Dallas Cowboys training and recovering at our facility. On top of that, we have a tremendous community! My members remember how hard it was for them to take that first step in the door and not long ago it was them. They are welcoming and supportive, they are the difference at Sanctum!
What was you like growing up?
I was raised out in the country, with rolling hills, tall trees, and a rolling river. I didn’t play sports but instead, I spent a lot of time exploring the miles of wooded hills, hunting, and fishing. I was always running, biking, and hiking out in the woods with my faithful dog Twigs!
