Today we’d like to introduce you to Xan Barkwell.
Xan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my fashion journey in high school as a Fashion Marketing student at the School of Business and Management. It was there that I began to learn, and express my style and creativity.
I started to brand myself with style and clothing two years ago. I am a student at UNT, so at that time there were factors that ultimately led to me being stagnant, but knowing exactly where I want(ed) to be. I decided to change my major and focus solely on fashion and style, coincidentally allowing me to use credits I had obtained in high school.
That decision has led me to where I am today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all. I started my branding two years ago, I didn’t get my first client until the Fall of last year. Thankfully, I have had amazing clients since then!
I started making my looks like a hobby on a former app called Polyvore. I would ask my friends sometimes to pick a shoe on a look if I couldn’t decide. One of my friends suggested that I start posting them on Insta, and I was thinking it wouldn’t really be of interest to anyone. This was the time at the beginning where I had to decide and figure. Models? How will I market my services? pricing? Do people really want a stylist? These are all things I’m asking myself. But that time was needed because I realized that consistency was the key. I started posting and putting my name on my images and it slowly but surely grew and is only going to get bigger and better.
What do you do? What do you specialize in?
I am a wardrobe stylist, and my business is Styled by Xan B., where I offer personal and professional styling services. All of my services and processes are conducted by me and I personally select the looks or items. I offer photoshoot packages that are tailored to fit the needs and theme of the photoshoot or occasion.
As a business, I am extremely grateful for and proud of, my creative team, my clients, and opportunities like this!
What sets me apart would be that I service both men and women, and all body types. Also, my customer service. I have a motto that I want my clients to be comfortable and confident. Having comfort and security in your look will inevitably radiate confidence. I try to make sure my clients learn something from their experience so that they are confident in any selection they make for themselves.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is defined as growth. Any signal of growth and you know you are successful or working your way towards success. Growth in my clientele, growth in opportunities and experiences, growth in mindset and engagement. These are all things that will inevitably make you successful as they provide challenges and sharpen your skill set.
