Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Kim.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started taking interest in social media back in middle school and high school, with MySpace and then Tumblr. My Tumblr page grew to over 18,000 followers within three years, and I decided to finally start an Instagram page in college. Now, I use my social media platforms to showcase fashion, beauty and lifestyle-related content.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been smooth since not everyone is interested in the exact same things as me and my own interests have changed over time. When I originally started my Tumblr page, I was very into the “preppy” look, but my style evolved and it worried me that my followers would no longer be interested in my content. Although I still struggle with this at times, the best thing to do is be honest and genuine with your followers. They will understand that you are human too.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am currently a law student, so I like to show other students how to balance their schoolwork and a social media side hustle. It’s also such a great feeling having my peers at my school ask me for fashion and beauty advice, whether it be skincare product recommendations or the best salon in town. I think my status as a law student sets me apart from other influencers my age because it really shows brands that I can work well under a great amount of stress and still deliver top quality content.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
As a first-generation Korean American, I experienced the typical immigrant lifestyle and struggles growing up. My parents barely speak English, yet they still try their best to provide for our family, so they definitely instilled my sense of persistence and a strong desire to succeed.
Also, during my junior year of college, I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Milan, Italy for a semester. Not only did this spark my love for fashion and luxury goods, but it made me really appreciate the history behind these brands on a new level. By immersing myself in one of the fashion capitals of the world, I was able to get a better sense of the fashion industry and incorporate what I learned into my social media content.
