Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Malouf.
Jill, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I call myself an ‘art-torney.’ I’m a lawyer and a self-taught artist.
I’ve always had a passion for design and art. My urge to create had gotten so out of control that I began basically forcing myself on my friends and family to redesign their spaces. I even did it without their knowledge while they were out of town!
Art should be approachable and enjoyable. I also love to incorporate humor in titles of my pieces, like ‘Koi Fish Narcissist’.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My mother’s passing spurned me to create my first series of paintings. She worked as a family therapist, yet had a strong creative side. I get my smarts and my art genes from her.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a business litigator by day and painter by night and on weekends. I’ve even used a blow torch on my driveway to finish an encaustic wax piece while wearing heels and a dress before work!
As a lawyer, I’m proud to have served by the community as a former prosecutor in Dallas. For the last 20+ years, I’ve helped my business clients avoid the courtroom when possible.
What an honor when someone wants one of my pieces for their home or office! It’s personal to them, so it’s important to me. My abstract paintings are calming and often hint at a scene to allow your imagination to fill in the gaps. I love working with clients and designers and will be pursuing a good fit with a gallery.
I’m also just starting to offer giclees and prints of some of my pieces.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband Carter Malouf is my biggest cheerleader. He’s a jewelry designer who loves the creative process as much as I do.
How crazy is it that his mother Dian is also a jewelry designer, and his father was a lawyer?
