Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikita Hill.
Nikita , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story begins when I joined the US NAVY at age 18-22. I lived in many states to include Virginia, Washington, Illinois, Georgia, and now Texas. My husband an Army Veteran is from Mesquite Texas, so now, this is finally home. I started really diving into my artwork in 2015. I needed an avenue to help cope with PTSD and depression. I wanted my artwork and my story to be able to change the narrative of female veterans of color struggling with these disabilities. Many people have a negative image of what a person dealing with PTSD looks like. I hope to change this image. Being able to travel the world and meet people from all walks of life has been a big influence on my artwork as well. I currently work for the Department of Veterans Affairs and see all walks of life and colors. Being able to help others, helps me. Sharing my artwork helps and I hope that it will help others on their journey to finding peace.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, the journey has been honestly difficult. But, I think I finally found the light at the end of my tunnel. Being a creative, I often get intimidated and underestimate my talent. So, surrounding myself with positive energy people and loved ones is imperative to everyday life as a mom, wife, and friend. Be mindful of the company you keep. My advice to other women is to not remain stuck. We often don’t know where to start. Starting is the goal. Once you start, the ball starts rolling from there. Make goals, and set timelines. And actively meet those timelines.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an artist, a vegetable and herb gardener and I am also a Management Analyst for the Department of Veterans Affairs. I would have to say I am proud of my artwork and my volunteer work with helping other veterans with obtaining knowledge about their VA benefits. What sets me apart from others that I am a self-taught artist, I strive to serve others, and my work is dedicated to helping people heal from their day to day struggles.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Be mindful of what you say because you can never take it back. Work can be frustrating but you are your own walking advertisement. How you treat others is a direct reflection of who you are and will follow you forever.
